Rotary Grant Funds Science Books at Briarcliff Library

Thanks to the efforts of Rachel Leihbacher, the Briarcliff Manor Public Library has 51 new books.

"George Camp from the Ossining Rotary told me about this grant application," said Leihbacher, a member of the Briarcliff Manor Rotary.

With Camp's guidance, she applied for the 2012-13 District 7230 Literacy Grant last year and was awarded $800 for the library, with the help of Mahopac National Bank.

Leihbacher said she wanted to find a way to help out the library—and in particular the children's room—because she is close with the Wasserman family, which donated funds to bring Juliette’s Room to fruition.

In her application, Leihbacher wrote, "We are looking for funding to update and expand the non-fiction selection of science books for children, from the youngest to elementary readers. The focus is to inspire and feed children's curiosity about the natural world and how things work."

Briarcliff Manor Children and Teens Librarian Amy Kaplan said the books will supplement the children's room collection with material not covered in the library budget.

Charlie Hellmich of Mahopac National Bank, who is also a Pleasantville Rotarian, was on-hand at the library Thursday to officially present the $800 check to Kaplan and library Director Melinda Greenblatt. Leihbacher was also joined by Briarcliff Manor Rotarian Anne Cargill.
