Truck Driver Charged Following Overpass Strike

A Delaware man is being charged with numerous driving infractions after police say a truck he was driving hit a Saw Mill River Parkway overpass in Pleasantville today.

The Westchester County road's northbound lanes in the village between Manville and Bedford Roads was closed for approximately six hours this morning after the truck was unable to pass underneath the overpass.

The 40-year-old Bear, Delaware man was driving a tractor trailer registered to Fee Trans Service of Norman, Oklahamona, Westchester County Department of Public Safety Spokesman Kieran O'Leary said.

"The driver told our officers that this was his first trip to New York and that he was using the GPS program on his cell phone," O'Leary continued.

While no one was injured in the accident, "When the trailer buckled, it did cause an auxiliary fuel tank on the truck to rupture, spilling about 30 gallons of diesel fuel on the roadway," he said.

The man has been charged with driving a restricted vehicle on the parkway, driving an overheight vehicle on the parkway and failure to obey a traffic control device—"The signs at all parkway entrances say 'No Trucks' or 'Passenger Cars Only,'" O'Leary said.
