"Walk in My Shoes" Comes to Bedford Road School

Fourth graders in Pleasantville participated in a day of unique activities.

's Bedford Road School PTA (Special Needs Committee) joined forces with the Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA) for a day of understanding and sensitivity for fourth graders.

Similiar to 's annual , the students rotated through six stations of activities that gave them an idea of what challenges fellow students with disabilities may face every day.

Dyslexia: Students attempt to read instructions, complete mazes, write while looking into a mirror.

Hand: Students attempt a variety of tasks while using only one hand (e.g., juvenile arthritis, lack of fine motor skills).

Communication: Speech disorders and sensory integration disorders. Activities include keeping their tongues out as they pass a message along (telephone) and balance on one foot and speak at the same time.

Sensory Integration Disorder: Students wear gloves and try to identify items in a box by touch, string beads on a thin rope.

Vision: Students wear vision-blurring glasses while playing various games.

Allergies: Students are assigned a food allergy, then shop and design a daily menu using the food choices provided.
