The Beach Boys played the Westchester County Center on Tuesday.
County Executive Rob Astorino has declared May 15, 2012 as “Beach Boys Day” in Westchester and honored the legendary band from sunny California with a proclamation Tuesday afternoon just before their evening show at the Westchester County Center. “My parents, when I tell them about my job and who I meet, no excitement—but when I told them The Beach Boys and all of a sudden they are jumping down—‘Can we come? Can we come?'” said Astorino. The Beach Boys and the Westchester County Parks system are both celebrating their 50th anniversaries. The Beach Boys are currently on tour and will be releasing their newest album “That’s Why God Made the Radio,” in June. Astorino, who attended Tuesday's show, said this is the beginning of reviving the “…

Todd Elementary School students learned about the writing process on Friday.
The following was provided by Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES. Find out how you can share your news on Patch here. Author Dan Gutman shared not only his books with students at Todd Elementary School, but his challenges. “I got lots of rejection letters,” he told the children, “but did I give up? No!” He encouraged them to find what they loved to write about and stick with it. Author of The Baseball Card Adventure Series and The Weird School series, including Ms. Beard Is Weird, which will be released in June, Gutman took students through the writing process, including which genre to choose from, as well as the publishing process.
The public is invited to a night of dinner, arts and an original performance by students.
For the 300 or so students who live at the Jewish Child Care Association's (JCCA) Pleasantville Cottage School throughout the year, the therapeutic arts program offers a positive outlet. "It is a way for them to express themselves," explained Lisa Sherman-Cohen, JCCA's director of communications and marketing. "A lot of these kids have had a lot of trauma in their lives and it's a way for them to share with the other youths and a way for them to have other people understand what they have been through." For the second consecutive year, the school's Arts in Action night will also give community members a chance to tap into about 40 of the students' minds. "Most of them are inner-city children coming from the five boroughs; they are foster …

The musical revival "Hairspray" is set in the early 1960s.
The applause is appreciatively thunderous as the company of Hairspray ends each performance of the 2002 Broadway musical comedy with the aptly named "You Can't Stop the Beat" at the Westchester Broadway Theatre in Elmsford. The beat is evident throughout the evening starting with an energetic and catchy rendition of "Good Morning Baltimore" which identifies where the musical is set in 1962 as it begins its probe of the social inequalities of that period in time. The show, the 174th play over 37 years put on by Westchester Broadway Theatre, is based on a 1988 film of the same name written and directed by John Waters. Hairspray opened at the Elmsford dinner/theater on May 3 and will continue to June 3. This is in keeping with a new policy …

Ossining writer to launch latest work at Pleasantville's Village Bookstore Friday.
Many know the story of Julia Child, the chef and television personality whose French cooking style cookbooks were at the forefront of American popular culture in the 1960s and 1970s. And Ossining's Susanna Reich is no exception. "I watched her growing up and always loved her," Reich said. "When I saw the movie Julia & Julia...it rekindled my love for Julia Child." The Hastings native—a modern dancer turned floral designer turned children's book author—even met Child in January of 1993 at one of her 80th birthday parties. "She had a series of birthday parties across the country," Reich explained. "The New York party was held at the Rainbow Room—it was a black tie gala and all of New York's culinary stars were there." A flower designer at …

Ben Adler has his sights set on film school as he finishes up his senior year.
Name, Age: Ben Adler, 17 School: Briarcliff High School Accomplishment: Winning the overall prize and creative category at the Greenwich Youth Film Festival Key to Awesomeness: Lacrosse Captain Ben Adler's team may not have beat Pleasantville High School at last week's Saw Mill Slugfest, but he did get a piece of exciting news at halftime. "We were kind of down and my dad came running across the field," he recalled. "I was supposed to be sad because we were losing, but I couldn't help but laugh and smile a bit." Adler decided to join his team for the rivalry matchup rather than attend the Greenwich Youth Film Festival, where his short film Addiction (see adjacent YouTube video) was entered in the creative category. And his father delivered…

Area women star in production that raised more than $20,000 for Pleasantville's Hope's Door.
The following comes to us from Elyssa Feldman Most, event co-coordinator, on the success of the Vagina Monologues on Saturday night in Hastings-on-Hudson starring a cast full of Rivertown women: It was an amazing event! We sold out by Friday afternoon, had to turn down emails and phone calls requesting tickets Saturday afternoon and then scrambled to find extra seating for those who showed up at the door Saturday night. The atmosphere at The Purple Crayon was electric. It was a fabulous celebration of the community coming together to support women. And the performances were dynamic, heart wrenching, funny and honest. Our grand total raised was $20,000+. CarlLa Horton from Hope's Door [women's shelter in Pleasantville] believes, to her …

Middle and high school students are gearing up for this year's performance.
Briarcliff High School and Middle School students will take to the stage in two weeks for the annual dance concert. While last year's concert included a wide variety of dance types—including hip hop, Spanish and contemporary—this year has "less diversity, but deeper focus on the content of the dances and the choreographic arrangements," explained Instructor Diane Guida. "The students did a lot of study on analyzing musical and choreographic structure," she said. "In some cases, themes did not emerge until the choreography was perhaps 2/3 of the way completed. The styles are primarily modern/lyrical, a few flashes of hip hop and some 'pop' styles." About 70 total students will perform in the concert, ranging from grades six to 12—all …
