Going green can often help sell a home more quickly.
Many households still tend to shy away from adopting green living habits for fear they’ll be too hard, time-consuming, or expensive. In reality, there are many green habits that are easy, inexpensive, and will help you sell your home faster. Cutting down on energy usage is often a great way to save money. Do you know that many buyers today will ask a seller how much they pay each month on their utilities? Some might even go so far as to ask for copies of the homeowners utility bills. In order to make this often large amount of money seem more reasonable, going green can help. Consider “greening” up your appliances. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, getting rid of old and outdated appliances can save thousands of dollars per…

The public duked it out at Thursday night's long and heated forum surrounding the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's annual assessment of Indian Point.
Eleven thousand jobs created by a power plant. Eighteen million lives affected in the New York metro area by its demise. Those were the main numbers the protestors – of which there were many at Thursday night's annual public hearing on Indian Point – were throwing around. The protestors were louder, or least more organized, than the pro-nuclear folks. They were also more colorful. There were the Raging Grannies with their purposely frumpy clothes and song (a gimmick, admitted one, but anything to get the message heard). Some Japanese people wore hazmat suits emblazoned with red nuclear symbols, a powerful reminder of the Fukushima disaster and the fact that Japan's gone fully non-nuclear since. As of two weeks ago, the country closed its…

The recall is nationwide.
Thousands of crib tents sold by several major retailers are being recalled due to a "serious safety risk," state and federal officials said Thursday. The state Department of Consumer Protection is alerting consumers about a nationwide voluntary recall announced by The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and five major retailers. Refunds will be made available to consumers who have purchased any of the recalled crib tents or play yard tents made by Tots in Mind, Inc., officials said. According to CPSC, infants and toddlers are at risk of serious injury or death due to strangulation and entrapment by the products, and agency officials are urging parents and caregivers to stop using these crib tents and play yard tents immediately. Do not…

Owner Michael Grant thanks the community for its support of the coffee shop.
The following was written by Black Cow Coffee Company Owner Michael Grant: May 16th, one year ago today, we opened the doors to The Black Cow Coffee Company, 7 Wheeler Ave., Pleasantville; taking over the location of the closed Dragonfly Cafe. From day one, we knew Pleasantville was the perfect fit for our business. A wonderfully vibrant community that seemed completely open to what we do. My wife Peggy and I had for years been thinking of opening a second store and actually looked 12 years ago at this exact space. As we were weighing our options, the Dragonfly took the chance and opened. Ten years later the space became available again and we just felt we had to take it. The opportunity came to us. With the closing of the Dragonfly, the …
The Beach Boys played the Westchester County Center on Tuesday.
County Executive Rob Astorino has declared May 15, 2012 as “Beach Boys Day” in Westchester and honored the legendary band from sunny California with a proclamation Tuesday afternoon just before their evening show at the Westchester County Center. “My parents, when I tell them about my job and who I meet, no excitement—but when I told them The Beach Boys and all of a sudden they are jumping down—‘Can we come? Can we come?'” said Astorino. The Beach Boys and the Westchester County Parks system are both celebrating their 50th anniversaries. The Beach Boys are currently on tour and will be releasing their newest album “That’s Why God Made the Radio,” in June. Astorino, who attended Tuesday's show, said this is the beginning of reviving the “…

Several residents continued to raise concerns for Chilmark Shopping Center proposal.
Noise, safety and environmental concerns were raised by locals who weighed in on Urstadt Biddle Properties' proposal to build a CVS at the Chilmark Shopping Center in Briarcliff Manor. The village's board of trustees voted on May 2 to approve a negative State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) declaration for the proposal that has been before the trustees and planning board for more than one year. The SEQRA determination led the village board to approve a special permit for the developer, who has laid out a plan for 4.5 parking spaces per 1,000 square feet on the property. In the latest plan shared with the planning board during Tuesday's public hearing, additional lighting to the center's upper parking lot was outlined, along with …

Police were called to the scene after a man demanded money while holding a gun at the Marble Avenue restaurant.
A man was taken to the Westchester Medical Center after struggling with a suspect who tried to rob Louie Linguine's at gunpoint, Pleasantville Chief of Police Richard Love said at the scene. Love said the police department received a call reporting the alleged armed robbery at approximately 10:40 p.m. Sunday evening. He said the restaurant had just closed for the night and the lights were turned off when a man entered through the back door, pointed a pistol at the owner and demanded money. The suspect did not get any money before breaking through the restaurant's front door and fleeing the scene. "The [black] male...broke through the front doors because they were broken, hopped into a car that was being operated by a male white—a dark-…
The days of interns being office gophers are a thing of the past. Employers need to be aware of the rules for interns.
Need someone to do your filing, sort your mail, fetch your coffee and other grunt work? An unpaid intern is not the answer. Many may remember summer intern experiences where they had hoped to learn about business and a particular industry but instead spent their time being the office errand boy or girl. Woe to the company that tries that now. New federal guidelines for internships were released in 2010 in response to the uptick in the number of unpaid internships over the last few years. The concern was that some employers were bringing in unpaid labor to help them through tough economic times. One of the issues is having unpaid interns perform tasks that displace paid workers. For example, if an intern performs work that the firm would…

I think your right. We would have to clearcut and level Buchanan to lay out enough 35% effecient solar cells and huge storage batteries. Just to remind enviro. groups nothing grows under and around solar farms, more suited for a desert. How about water wheels in the Hudson, this was talked about years ago, totally green no carbon emitted. How do you think that would go over   more ›
