Briarcliff Girls' and Pleasantville Boys' Track & Field Teams Win Season Openers

The Briarcliff girls’ track & field team won their season’s first meet scoring 93 points to Pleasantville’s 41 and Ossining’s 33. The strong team effort included the Lady Bears winning 11 of the 16 contested events with senior captain Sophie Feuer leading the way winning the 200 (26.6), 400 (60.5), 800 (2:34.5). All of Sophie’s performances qualified her for the County and Class B Championships later this season. Senior Sharon Luan and sophomores Caroline Pennacchio and Katherine Shine also claimed victories with Sharon winning the High Jump (4’ 6”)and 400 Hurdles (1:14.1), Caroline dominating the distance events with individual firsts in the 1500 (5:21.2) and 3000 (11:28.5) and Katherine leading the throwing events with victories in both the Shot Put (25’ .5”) and Discus (70’ 8”).

Briarcliff also scored big points with second place finishes by sophomore Samylda Charles in the High Jump (4’ 3”), freshman Julia Duffy in the Long Jump (12’ 8.5”) and Triple Jump (26’ 1”), junior Blake Elwood in the 1500 (5:46.6), freshman Sophia Gelard in the 100 (13.3), freshman Julia Goodkin in the Discus (61’ 11”), Sharon in the 100 Hurdles (19.9), and sophomore Molly Rickles in the 3000 (12:34.1). The Bears also won the two longer relays with Caroline, Sophia, Sharon and Sophie winning the 4x400 (4:24.4) and Molly, Blake, junior Sarah Bianco and Caroline victorious in the 4x800 (11:55.6).

The Pleasantville girls had a good second place showing with winners junior Olivia Heintzman in the 100 Hurdles (19.5) and junior Jamie Danyko in the Triple Jump (26’ 6”).  Olivia also had a second place finish in the 400 Hurdles (1:17.1) as did junior Danielle Murray in the 400 (1:04.3).   In all, twelve lady Panthers qualified for the Class B Championship Meet.

For the boys, Pleasantville came away with the win scoring 82 points to Briarcliff’s 59 and Ossining’s  25. The Panthers won 10 events led by junior Eli Waxler who won the 1600 (4:55.4) and 3200 (10:42.0), anchored the winning 4X800 (9:04.0) along with junior Eamon Coburn, freshman JC Yahia, sophomore Drew Dorflinger  and ran a leg on the victorious 4X400 relay (3:47.4) with juniors Sam Mendez, Eamon, and Patrick Watts.  Sophomore Eric Hughes was the Panthers’ other multiple winner in the 100 (11.5) and 200 (23.2) while anchoring the second place 4X100 (48.3) with teammates Kevin Proctor, junior Dan Gottlieb and sophomore Tyler Ossowski.  Senior Kevin Proctor was another big scorer with a win in the 110 hurdles (17.0) and second places in both the Long and Triple Jumps.  Pleasantville’s other winners were Patrick Watts in the 400 (54.2), Sam Mendez in the 400 Hurdles (1:04.8) and junior Brandon Castro in the Shot Put (35’ 7.5”).  All of the individual winners made the Section Class B Qualifying standard as did six other athletes.

The Briarcliff boys’ team was led by senior captain Gerardo Munoz with victories in the Long Jump (19’ 11”), High Jump (5’ 7”) and Triple Jump (37’ 11”). All of Gerardo’s performances also qualified him for the County and Class B Championships later this season. Senior Chris Keenan won the Discus (86’ 11”) and junior Ian Wax came home victorious in the 800 (2:10.1) for the Bears’ other wins. The Bears also had strong second place finishes by junior Cole DiNome in the 1600 (4:56.6) and 3200 (10:59.7), senior Mike Jacobs in the Discus (85’ 8”) and senior Ryan Rosen in the Shot Put (34’ 0”).
