Briarcliff High School Track & Field Teams Win!!!

The Briarcliff High School boys’ and girls’ track & field teams travelled to Anne M. Dorner Middle School in Ossining on Monday as the skies darkened and rain threatened for the team’s second outing of the year. Despite the ever worsening conditions the Bears kept the heat on with outstanding performances all around. The Lady Bears continued their winning ways scoring 87 points to Ossining’s 61 and Westlake’s 16 taking their season record to 4 – 0.. The Bears boys’ team was equally strong scoring 80 points to Ossining’s 61 and Westlake’s 26 taking their season record to 3 – 1.

 The strong team effort included the Lady Bears winning 10 of the 16 contested events.  Senior Sharon Luan and sophomore Caroline Pennacchio each claimed two individual victories with Sharon winning the High Jump (4’ 2”) and 400 Hurdles (1:15.8) and Caroline dominating the middle distance events with firsts in the 800 (2:36.3) and the 1500 (5:26.1). Also claiming individual victories were sophomore Katherine Shine in the Shot Put (24’ 7”) and freshmen Devon Bombassei in the 3000 (12:31.0),  Julia Duffy in the Triple Jump (26’ .5”) and Sophia Gelard in the 400 (1:04.7). The Bears also won the two longer relays with Devon and Caroline teaming up with junior Blake Elwood and sophomore Molly Rickles to win the 3200 Relay (11:42.9) and Sharon, Caroline and Blake teaming up with junior Sarah Bianco to win the 1600 Relay (4:46.7).

 Scoring big with second place finishes were Sarah Bianco in the 400 (1:07.6) and 800 (2:54.1), sophomore Samylda Charles in the 100 Hurdles (21.0), junior Blake Elwood in the 1500 (5:37.8) and senior Rachel Strauss in the High Jump (4’ 2”) and Triple Jump (22’ 9”). The Bears’ 400 Relay of Sophia, Julia, Samylda and Sarah (58.1) also picked up second place.

 The Briarcliff boys’ team won 9 of the 16 events and were led by senior stars Gerardo Munoz and Sean Pohar with Gerardo winning the High Jump (5’ 7”) and Triple Jump (37’ 5”) and Sean  winning the 110 Hurdles (19.7) and 400 Hurdles (1:11.8) and  distance ace junior Cole DiNome who ran away with victories in the 1600 (4:47.3) and 3200 (11:00.9). Also winning for the Bears were junior Ian Wax in the 800 (2:10.3) and freshman throwing sensation Jack Zimmerman in the Shot Put (38’ 9”). The team of senior Joseph Pennacchio, junior Jacob Ryan and sophomore Sebastian Rojas joined with Ian on the anchor leg to win the 3200 Relay (9:27.3).

 The Bears second place finishers were Gerardo Munoz in the Long Jump (18’ 6.5”), sophomore Matt Neuendorf in the 1600 (5:04.2) and 3200 (11:11.3), senior Ryan Rosen in the Shot Put (34’ 7”). The Bears 400 Relay team of juniors Michael Jones, George Keiter and Jonathan Wolfson and sophomore Sean Hansen garnered second place (51.8) as did the team of Gerardo, Matt and Ian who joined with junior Dilan Patel in the 1600 Relay (3:56.7).

 Next meet for the Bears is the Ossining Relays this Saturday at Anne M. Dorner Middle School.
