Holiday Hope

Briarcliff Senior Girl Scout Troop 2058 is very busy this holiday season. These girls adopted a class of GED girls from the North Central Bronx Hospital High School Equivalency Program. The students are teen mothers who have financial hardship. Their teacher, Mrs. Marybeth Ahearn (a resident of Briarcliff Manor) wished for some assistance with her classroom supplies and holiday cheer as budget cuts have greatly affected the quality of her program.  The scouts wanted to encourage these teen moms to stay focused on their goals and attain their high school equivalency degrees so they can apply to college to pursue a career, or join the work force and become independent mothers. The scouts joined efforts to collect 17 packages of diapers, 36 packages of wipes, toys, baby blankets, movies and over 140 toddler/preschool books. Then they assembled gift bags for the students with home-made ornaments and special treats. They even made additional gift bags to share among the volunteer “nursery grandmas.”

Troop 2058 also made holiday decorations for the classroom to inspire the girls to see the goodness of others and to support them despite their feelings of helplessness and lonesomeness.  Then, each scout baked a holiday treat to send along with their donations so that the teen moms could enjoy a classroom party this season.

The girls of troop 2058 are Jenna Whalen, Jackie Contento, Grace Boyar, Teresa Marinaccio, Natalie Alfieri, Georgia Burkard, Jillian Maguffin, Rekha Crawford, Devon Bombassei and Kristen Bringsjord. They are girls helping girls as they continue on their journey to make this world a better place.
