Local Baker Helps Girl Scouts

What sweeter place to finish up a Girl Scout Journey than at a local cupcake bakery? Troop 2058 did just that this past weekend at the Flour and Sun Bakery on Washington Ave. in Pleasantville. The troop was eager to interview a woman entrepreneur as part of their Senior Level Girltopia Journey. Proprietor of Flour and Sun Bakery, Denise Treco, was a pleasure to meet and answered their questions about how she was able to open up a successful bakery. She discussed the steps involved in starting her business and spoke about the challenges she faced and the obstacles she needed to overcome. The scouts enjoyed listening to Ms. Treco as she shared stories with them about her large supportive family and her realizing her dream while effectively managing her time. She has a full time job and still runs the bakery because she is a “workaholic.” Ms. Treco taught the girls how important it is to find a career that they love and are happy to do so they never feel like they are working. Then the girls got a quick demonstration on frosting cupcakes and all got to frost and eat their own. A big thank you goes to Ms. Treco for generously donating her time and her very delicious goods. In fact, the leaders couldn’t leave until we indulged in the freshly baked and tasty treats of the Flour and Sun Bakery.

Navigating through the Girltopia Journey has helped GS troop 2058 to recognize many ways to make a better world for girls. They have spent this school year learning about women and poverty, social behaviors and the media, ethical decision making and the importance of educating girls. These scouts have identified needs of girls in society and have taken action.  They have been inspired and have inspired others, as well.  They recently earned their Visionary Awards for their immediate service this year and long lasting commitment to the movement of improving the status of girls and women, locally and globally. Finally, troop 2058 has reflected on their work and will pass it forward. How sweet it is!
