Quick! Before School Starts!
Dr. Nancy Millian, psychologist, recommends getting help for anxious kids now to help ease them into transitioning back to school. Some children become panicky at the thought of encountering new teachers, children and increased academic demands. Now's the time to give them techniques to increase coping skills and confidence. If a child has expressed fears about returning to school in the Fall, contact the school now to see whether they are willing to allow your child a visit there prior to school beginning. Sometimes, a quick hello to meet the new teacher or to get a feel for the layout of the school can be helpful. If anxiety seems to be building, work with a therapist to help your anxious child cope better.
