Patch Picks: Follow A Passion or Find a Hobby

This summer, learn to sail, travel the world through books, join a rock band, create a container herb garden, learn how to speak English or practice ASL.

Although kids may be pleased their classes are out for the summer, many adults find that with the children away or otherwise occupied, this is the perfect time of year to discover a new passion or dabble in a hobby.

"Novel Destinations"

“Novel Destinations” is the Summer reading program for adults hosted by the . The program runs from June 24 until August 25 and is open to those who are 18 years of age and older. Travel to distant lands through books and movies that take you around the world. Activities include: Foreign film mini-festival, book bazaar, sampling international foods. Learn to Sail

"Learn to Sail for Not a lot of Money" is a six-session program held by the Society for American Sailors. Land lessons are held on Thursdays July 7, 14, 21 and 28  from 7 to 10 p.m. at the White Plains YWCA (515 North St.). Water sessions are held July 24 and 31 from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. at the Shattemuc Yacht Club in Ossining. Courses are taught by American Red Cross intructors. Student sailors will gain 16 hours of hands-on experience using SEAS Westchester's fleet of Phantoms and Sunfish.

Amp Up Your Herb Garden

Craft with kitchen herbs at Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture in Pocantico Hills. Jack Algiere, the vegetable farm manager at Stone Barns, will demonstrate how to make a Hypertufa planter using a mixture of cement, peat moss and other textural materials. Shannon Algiere will help you plant your container garden with your favorite kitchen herbs grown on-site. The course is offered on Thursday, July 7 and Friday, July 15. 914-366-6200.

Free classes in "English for Speakers of Other Languages" are being held at the . The classes begin July 5 (registration June 28 and June 30, from 5:45-8:45pm required) and continue through August 4th. Rock Out

The Rock Band Workshops for adults at the Mike Risko Music School in Ossining are offered in the evenings. They consist of band rehearsals once a week and then a gig, for your family, fans and friends to attend. With such busy schedules, it can be hard to put a band together, run rehearsals and plan gigs. Risko makes it easy by doing all the hard work. All you have to do is show up with your instrument and play. 914-762-8757.

Learn a New Language

The Westchester American Sign Language Practice Group a recently founded “meet-up” of ASL students and enthusiasts, welcome anyone (beginners included) interested in practicing the use of American Sign Language. The next meeting is  Sunday June 26 at 2 p.m. at Barnes & Nobles in the Cortlandt Town Center (3089 E. Main Street).
