A sunny Memorial Day, a perfect day for touring a garden! Visit "The Briar Patch"!

"The Briar Patch" A sunny Memorial Day, a perfect day for touring a garden! The sun finally came out and what a gorgeous day it was!! Especially after so many "rain days"--so many that I have lost count. While I was outside planting today, I got a call from Joan, a Briarcliff Manor Garden Club member, who encouraged me to come on by to take a look at her poppies & rhodos, which she said were right now at their blooming peak.

So, with camera, note pad & pen in hand, I got into the car and drove over. Her property is quietly nestled in comfortable seclusion, nearby to PACE College and the Donald Trump National Golf Course.

The acreage is divided into several little garden centers. There is the Alpine Center, a grouping of white pine, hemlock and blue spruce trees. Then there is, what Joan calls “The Hospital Center”, a recovery area for plants that aren't up to par-so they were transferred to this garden hospital to recover. Once rehabilitated, they will be returned back to their original location. The Hospital Center also includes a "Nursery Unit" (like the pediatric ward in a hospital) reserved for spruce seedlings, which will be relocated once they become large enough to be transported. Joan's plant hospital is sustainable in its edging from salvaged logs utilized from downed trees resulting from Hurricane Sandy.

When I returned home, I saw my miracle daylilies in bloom. I say “miracle” as lilies are usually an early breakfast for perennial deer diners, but I forgive the deer, as they leave my Bearded Iris’ alone.
