All-State Musicians at BHS

On December 8, Sophia Rooks performed on viola in the All-State Symphony Orchestra and Edwin Zhou performed on the flute in the All-State Symphonic Band. The performances took place in the Eastman Theatre in Rochester, NY, as part of the NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) Winter Conference. Students prepared intensively in their ensembles over the course of three days under the tutelage of professional conductors who are Master teachers as well as inspiring role models.

The highly selective All-State performing ensembles are comprised of students who have achieved perfect scores of 100 on their spring NYSSMA evaluations. There are eight performing groups: Vocal Jazz, Instrumental Jazz, Women’s Choir, Wind Ensemble, String Orchestra, Mixed Chorus, Symphonic Band and Symphonic Orchestra.

It is a true honor and distinction to be selected to perform in one of the All-State performing groups. Several thousand students from throughout New York State audition annually. Of these, approximately 900 are selected to perform in the aforementioned ensembles.
