Read-Aloud for Accuracy

Todd Elementary School hosted a building-wide “read-aloud” on Sept. 13. The literary event, led by Todd Principal Nadine McDermott, focused on the theme of “Striving for Accuracy,” one of the 16 “habits of mind” as identified by Habits of Mind International.

Mrs. McDermott initiated the read-aloud tradition four years ago when she began serving as Todd’s principal. Every year, a different theme is explored. With the guidance of library media specialist Tara Phethean, Mrs. McDermott began planning last spring for this year’s read-aloud. The principal read aloud a selection of stories to all grade levels, with lively group discussions related to the day’s theme following each story.

After every reading, students discussed the book and analyzed its message. They spoke about personal learning attributes such as persistence, flexibility, impulse management and metacognition (thinking about thinking). They also reflected upon the benefits of checking work repeatedly, drawing on past knowledge and striving for accuracy. The fifth-graders recognized the role they play as student ambassadors and shared anecdotes, while the kindergartners shared ideas about how to treat others.

Mrs. McDermott served as a music teacher for 20 years. In previous years, she read aloud to every classroom; with 610 students, however, reading to each grade in one specific area became more feasible. Thanks to a generous grant from the Briarcliff Manor Education Foundation, she has been able to utilize a portable amplification microphone system for the program.

“The read-aloud is a lot of fun for me,” said Mrs. McDermott, who finds connecting with the students to be of primary importance. “It helps build a positive relationship with the students.”

Two more read-aloud programs are scheduled at Todd Elementary for this year.
