Seeing the Country Through Skype at Todd School

Many classes at Todd Elementary School are jumping on the Skype bandwagon. Students are using Skype to video chat with classes all over the country. Through different Skype activities students are learning about different people, communities and states.

Third grade classes have traveled to Texas, Alabama and Iowa through Skype. They are participating in Mystery Location activities, where students work together to find out the location of a mystery class. The students ask questions, record answers, and consult maps, while narrowing down the possible location of their partner school. Third graders are also learning about New York State geography and must be able to answer questions about their area as well. The students are having a great time traveling across the country and learning about the different states along the way according to teacher Lori Whitman.

First graders and kindergarteners are reinforcing beginning sounds and numeracy through Skype. Whether they are participating in an ABC Bingo activity or figuring out a mystery number, the students are having a great time working with other students from across the country.

There is a United States map outside the computer lab that displays the many places Todd students have “visited” so far this year and they hope to make a stop in each of the 50 states!
