New Hours at Phelps Farmers' Market

Shorter hours at the new market and special vendors.

Hours of operation at the  Memorial Hospital have changed to 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. as of this Thursday, July 26. This slight adjustment is due to the fact that the flow of shoppers is heaviest during those hours.

Pascale Le Draoulec, the market's director, expressed pleasure at the fact that the market is getting bigger each week as more residents come out to shop.

"It's like a garden, it takes time to grow," said Le Draoulec, who sees great potential in the market, with all of the original vendors returning each week to participate.

Phelps also welcomes their newest addition to the market, Tiny Hearts Farms from North Salem, sharing their beautiful and unusual field flowers and organic fruits and vegetables.

One vendor in particular has everyone at Phelps rushing out the door to be the first in line. The "Dough Nation" pizza truck, unable to attend for the last two weeks, will return today to provide organic pizzas cooked on site in its brick oven on wheels. David DiBari, founder and chef of The Cookery in Dobbs Ferry, introduced his mobile pizza oven on June 1 and has been appearing at local farmers markets ever since, offering a set menu of eight different pies.

Each Thursday when the pizza truck arrives at Phelps, DiBari chooses the best looking produce item available at the market and features it on his menu for the day, making each week's combinations new and exciting. Some ingredients you can expect to see are homemade mozzarella cheese, garlic, thyme and other herbs, fresh lemon, fontina cheese, bianco pizza with mozzarella and riotta cheese, p olpette which are marble-sized meatballs, and nutella, a delicious chocolate hazelnut spread.

All pizzas on the menu range from $10 to $12 each, 2 percent of which is donated to a different local charity each month. During the month of July, this percentage of the pizza proceeds will go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Upon their return this Thursday at Phelps, "Dough Nation" will be offering the opportunity to "buy five pies, get one free!"

The Sleepy Hollow Farmers Market at Phelps is located in the Rockwood Hall parking area just north of the hospital, at the end of Route 117. Free parking is available in the nearby Phelps parking garage. The market will be open every Thursday between 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., now through November.
