It’s Not About the Belt

It's not about the belt...you don't need to be a Black Belt to act like one. Integrating the 5 Tenets of Taekwondo into everything you do...at work, school, play, and life.

“You Don’t Need To Be A Black Belt To Act Like One”
I have written a new book, It’s Not About The Belt...You Don’t Need To Be A Black Belt To Act Like One, which has been in development for over 30 years. This is a collection of my martial arts training and experiences, integrating the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects which have shaped my life and...guide me in how I teach Taekwondo.

This is also an expectation of my students; how they go out and interact with their friends, family, and community, to make this a better world to live in. And as I looked back at all the interactions that I have had teaching, it struck me that a lot of people are looking for ways to live more meaningful and fulfilling lives. And not just for themselves but for their families. I have found my path through Taekwondo and have begun sharing my thoughts through this blog on "living a Black Belt Life."

How do you achieve harmony through martial arts training?
It starts with vigorous, physical training. Training towards a goal, a Black Belt. Having a goal develops focus.

The path to earning the right to wear a Black Belt is full of challenges. And when you get there...when you overcome the challenges and complete your training and test for your Black Belt...you will have developed Black Belt Character, which is based on the tenets of Taekwondo; Integrity, Self Control, Indomitable Spirit, Respect, and Perseverance.

UMAC emphasizes these character traits during training. And developing Black Belt Character is achievable way before reaching the Black Belt level (Read my December 3rd blogpost).

The goal of my book focuses on these 5 tenets of Taekwondo and guides the reader on how to integrate these character traits into their lives and use these tenets as their life guide to help them live a better life. Through my recollection of real class events I share stories about...

  • Integrity - doing the right thing, even when not being watched
  • Self Control - developing physical and mental self discipline
  • Indomitable Spirit - harnessing a positive life attitude; exciting, full of enthusiasm, ability to tackle challenges
  • Respect - for one’s self, family, community, country; for life
  • Perseverance - follow-through, confidence = success
