Honor Our Heroes!

Did you know that today, Sunday, November 10th, is USMC Day?

The Marine Corps were created during the Revolutionary War, originally called the Continental Marines. If you see a Marine this week, thank them for their service protecting our country. While you’re at it, thank any Armed Forces veteran or active duty member in honor of Veteran’s Day.

And now that I have you in a “remembering” mood, November 10th is also National Forget Me Not Day. What a great time to thank our family, friends, and loved ones...all of our heroes and show them the respect due them.

RESPECT is at the center of the Martial Arts and is the basis of Taekwondo. And  you thought it was all about kicking and punching.

Respect is the first principle new students learn and they will practice respect throughout their training and are expected to demonstrate it inside and outside of the Martial Arts school. The Taekwondo student is expected to respect all things and people, starting with him or herself. This tradition was established in 500 A.D. in Korea by the Hwarang and continues today.

The Hwarang Do developed many philosophies to demonstrate their spirit and the development of one’s character. Some of the key virtues include: humanity, honor, courtesy, knowledge, trust, loyalty, friendship, kindness, wisdom, and courage. And the common thread is respect and honor.

Can you imagine how different life would be if everyone respected each other?

No bullying. No graffiti. People working together for the greater good. Just think how much we could accomplish working together instead of having separate agendas.

So while this week is a great time to honor and respect our veterans and all who serve our country its also a great time to look inside our hearts and minds. Think about respect. Think about honor.

Honor your heroes. Honor yourself.

And if you are a purist, then stop whatever you are doing on Monday, November 11, at 11:11am to observe a moment of silence in honor of all the soldiers who have died.

Thank you for this opportunity to serve you.
