Is Your Child Bullyproof?
Bullies and bullying will not go away. This is not a harmless rite of passage. Recent studies show that victims and bullies alike have higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide. Bullying transcends race, gender, age, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and is distressingly prevalent. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 28% of students aged 12 to 18 report being bullied in school.
What can a parent do?
- Acknowledge that bullying is prevalent and increase your awareness
- Raise your child's awareness about what bullies look for
- Maximize your child's self-confidence
- Talk with your child about bullying; being the bully and being a victim
- Strategies to avoid being bullied, what do bullies look for?
- How to handle a bully
- Talk about cyberbullying and know what is being communicated
The UMAC Bully-Proof program addresses all of the bullets above in "What Can A Parent Do?". In Taekwondo, the best fight is the one that doesn't occur. We stress non-violent survival tips and focus on your child being able to say, I am "HAPPY", "SMART", 'CONFIDENT", and "IN CONTROL".
In researching this topic I found this student-generated organization, Anti-Bullying Leadership Network that you and your child may like to join or follow for more information.
