Put Your Mind To It...

When you were young, did your parents tell you, “you can do anything you put your mind to.” Do you tell your children the same thing? And do you teach your children how to put their mind to it?


Just because you say I’m going to be the next millionaire, or major league baseball player, or lead singer in a band, is not enough. What are the steps needed to get to the end goal?

Similarly with New Year resolutions...I’m going to lose weight, get fit, eat healthier...just saying it isn’t going to fix the problem.

So where to begin? Well, put your mind to it.

Transforming one’s life by thinking and visualizing the end result is a good place to start. Once you know your destination you can map out your route. To reach a goal you need to set up meaningful objectives and the attainable steps to reach that goal. You need to change the way you think to direct the action you want to attain the result you are looking for. Check out my visual from last week's Patch article.

Now you know the basis for why you need to change the “...level of thinking” ala Einstein to solve your problems. Begin with the end in mind, then plot your course. Be mindful of your thoughts but don’t let your thoughts define you. Let your thoughts drive your actions.


So if you want to get healthy and feel better and perform better this year, what are the steps you need to do. This isn’t an “I’m going to lose 20 pounds” moment.


This is an…

  • I’m going to eat a healthy, low-fat, breakfast including fruit and whole grains every day to improve my performance and lose weight moment

  • I’m going to eliminate highly processed foods to reduce sugar, salt, artificial sweeteners, fats, and chemicals from my diet moment

  • I’m going to eat more vegetables, grains, and beans, and less bleached white flour, high-fat protein, alcohol, and sugary drinks, including diet drinks moment

  • I’m going to be active for a minimum of 30 minutes each day moment

  • I’m going to eliminate negative thoughts and focus on the positive things in life moment

  • I will not deprive myself, nor will I do things to excess moment


  • Just doing one of the first four bulleted items above, and not change anything else in your day, you will likely see a change. Then each week or two add one more of the bulleted items to your schedule so that in 8-10 weeks you will be eating healthier, getting more exercise, and thinking positively. Incorporate these changes into your lifestyle and you will have transformed your life.
