Two Months of Fun and...Educational Losses (Gulp!)

I studied to be a teacher and graduated from Mercy College with plans to become a history teacher before becoming a professional martial artist. Instead I accepted an offer to become Head Instructor of the school I trained at and eventually opened my own Taekwondo school. As a parent, teacher, and professional martial artist, I am in agreement with the research showing that children lose significant reading and math skills when away from school.

Do You Know?

  • All children experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer. And studies have demonstrated significant reading losses during winter and spring breaks of only 1-2 weeks

  • Most children lose about 2 months of math skills over the summer

  • If your child is at risk of obesity they stand to gain more weight and more rapidly during summer break

  • Parents consistently report that summer is the most difficult time to ensure that their children have productive things to do

  • I believe the benefits gained from learning the Martial Arts is invaluable for children which pay bigger dividends as they grow up. Do an online search for “positive benefits martial arts” and many results will be displayed, including two from Better Homes and Gardens and Parenting Magazine. Taekwondo teaches your children respect and this carries over into their schoolwork, helps to improve behavior and even grades.

Are discipline, respect, focus, integrity, perseverance, and self-control behaviors that you would like your child to improve on?

Maybe it’s time to check out Taekwondo UMAC-style.  Please call (914) 945--7100 to setup a convenient time to visit our school, come in to watch a class and ask questions. In addition to our regular classes we offer private lessons which is a great way to get started.

If you are looking for a safe, productive, feel good environment for your child’s summer day camp experience, there’s still time to register for UMAC Adventure Summer Camp. Plus UMAC is offering an extra week of camp in September since school starts later this year, Monday, September 9th, in observance of the Jewish holidays.

During the summer I will post my blog every other Monday providing insights on "Living a Black Belt Life". Please share this with your friends and family, leave a comment, and recommend this article.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve you!
