What Would You Do?

Have you seen this television show, “What Would You Do”? This ABC show secretly videotapes unsuspecting people reacting to everyday situations being played out by actors doing common things, like finding a wallet.

So what would you do if you found a bag with over $42,000 inside? Would you be as honest as the homeless man in Boston who turned the backpack into police? A homeless man with nothing, looks into this backpack and without any hesitation, turns it in! That’s integrity!

Let’s say you are at the mall and you see a father buying an ice cream cone for his child. As he pulls his wallet out a $20 bill falls to the ground. The man pays for the treat and begins to walk off. What would you do? What would your child do?

Do you have Integrity?

Integrity is more than being honest. It is doing the right thing, being fair, having a strict moral and ethical code. Integrity is integral to being respectful...to yourself, your family, and friends, and to all things.

Integrity is one of the foundations of the Martial Arts and an essential characteristic of a Black Belt. And living a Black Belt life means demonstrating integrity outside the Martial Arts school.

“Our character is what we do when we think no one is looking.” - H. Jackson Brown, Jr., writer, author, Life’s Little Instruction Book

Integrity is sticking to your word, doing what you say you will do, and conversely, not doing what you say you will not do.

As a parent, how often do you hear your child say, “I’ll clean up my room today.” Only to find they didn't clean up and if they did, their toys and clothes pushed under the bed and stuffed into the closet out of sight. Ok, maybe in their mind they “cleaned” up but did they do the job you wanted them to or expected?

The Martial Arts reminds us of the need to stay calm. Think and act like a Black Belt, where the best fight is the one that does not occur. Calmly explain your expectations. Talk to them about integrity and respect; following through on what they say they are going to do and taking care of their toys and clothes. What a great teaching moment.
