In
1961, Wide World of Sports, the quintessential sports anthology series
was launched. It's been over 50 years since the series was introduced,
but many of the events introduced to television on Wide World have
endured and grown to become iconic favorites such as
The Indianapolis 500,
The NCAA Basketball Championship Series
The Little League Championship
The US Figure Skating Championships
It
was on Wide World's coverage of heavyweight boxing championship fights
that Americans met Howard Cosell (considered by many to be America's
best sports journalist) and learned the story of Muhammad Ali.
In 1970 ABC brought professional football to prime time television
In
1972 the world watched ABC's coverage of the Olympics in horror when
Arab terrorists took members of the Israelis team captive in their rooms
in the Olympic Village in Munich. In the 18 hours that followed, 11
members of the team were killed, 2 in their rooms, the remaining 9 at
the Munich airport.
ABC Sports went on to capture the hearts of the
American sports fans with coverage of six more Olympic Games in
Montreal, Innsbruck, Lake Placid ( and who can't remember America's Gold
Medal victory in men's hockey), Sarejevo, Los Angeles and Calgary. It
was truly the golden era of sports programming/coverage on television
and ABC in the center of it all was considered the premiere network.
Doug
Wilson and Jim Jennett, residents of the Rivertowns grew up
professionally at ABC and became among the networks most senior
directors. They were at Munich, worked on Wide World when it launched,
and were on the inside when ABC gave American audiences another day of
football. Between them, Doug and Jim have garnered an extraordinary
total of 26 Emmy Awards. Between them there are probably enough stories
about those golden days and about the athletes we grew to love or hate
to keep us glued to our seats for hours. We are fortunate that they have
agreed to share many of those stories with us at Curious-on-Hudson
