Acclaimed Nutrition Consultant Joins Briarcliff Rotary

The Rotary Club of Briarcliff Manor is delighted to announce that reputed nutritionist and international nutrition consultant and researcher Ms. Vijaya Jain has joined the Club.

Ms. Vijaya Jain is a Nutrition Consultant in New York. Currently she is an active Board Member of the New York State WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Association She has over 30 years of experience in planning, directing and coordinating nutrition programs in diverse settings. While at the University of Illinois, she was the Director of the Graduate Internship Program and Senior Nutrition Specialist.  She led the efforts to enhance school lunch programs with soy protein foods in India and Central America in partnership with the World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH) whose primary goal is to create sustainable solutions to the problem of protein malnutrition around the world.  Ms. Jain also coordinated research and education efforts for the introduction of soy/whey based multimicronutrient supplements and for the development of microenterprise projects for families afflicted with HIV/AIDS in Central America with the aim of reducing protein and micronutrient deficiencies in this population.  She was actively involved with Illinois Soy (ISOY), which aims to improve the nutritional profile of the Illinois elementary and secondary school lunches and reduce obesity among school-aged children.  As a clinical nutritionist Ms. Jain has worked at the New York Presbyterian Hospital of Columbia & Cornell Universities in New York City, providing nutrition counseling to the nutritionally vulnerable groups and individuals.  She was also Director of the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program at the Ossining (New York) Open Door Health Center.  She received her M.S. degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, M.Sc. degree from the University of Madras, and B.Sc. degree from the University of Bangalore.  Ms. Jain is the recipient of Distinguished Service Awards from the New York State Metropolitan WIC Association (2000) and the New York State WIC Association (2005).  As a Registered Dietitian since 1979, she is also a certified Cardiovascular Nutritionist and has served as Co-Chair of the Nutrition Committee of the American Heart Association.

Ms. Jain was the featured speaker in the Club's "Preventative Health and Awareness" series last month, when she presented a highly informative talk on "Nutritional Benefits of Plant Based Diet".
