Summer Flavors

Harvest Rolling In
Over the next four weeks summer makes its statement in mounds of fresh, beautiful foods. Each week the fruit and produce brought to market reminds us of the season's potential to surprise, like seeing friends you haven't seen in a year: there are the blackberries, blueberries, raspberries and gooseberries; there are the perfect cucumbers to slice, salt and eat while standing in the kitchen; there are the first eggplants, apricots, plums and tomatoes; there are sunflowers more cheery than we recalled, crisp head lettuces we thought about all winter, and there are fresh herbs to add even more flavor to the offerings at the Pleasantville Farmers Market.

Fresh Herbs
This week's Phelps Health Tip:
"Herbs are a great way to slide in some antioxidants and phytochemicals. Add them to your salads, add dill to your fresh fish, mint to your cabbage, or basil to your tomatoes. Herbs make your menu more fun, more healthy, and more delicious!"

Herb You Can Rely Upon: Basil
Cutting and tying herb bundles for sale is something Jeff Bialis of J&A Farm admits takes time, and can be hard to fit in- but Jeff definitely will have basil Saturday. Jeff and his wife Adina have some pretty unique choices to harvest, growing up to 15 varieties of herbs over the season, including 5 types of basil. While sporadic offerings of dill, sage, thyme, cilantro, rosemary, mint and other favorites can be found throughout the Market, this week's "herb you can rely upon" is definitely basil. Track down yours from J&A Farm, Cowberry Crossing Farm, Little Seed Gardens, Mead Orchards, Newgate Farm, or Madura Farm. While you're at it you better get some tomatoes and Trotta Foods mozzarella too. If you wish to read further about basil have a look at this comprehensive post by 150ish.

Give Us Your Input
Market shoppers know their input matters, and each year the Pleasantville Farmers Market collects survey information from visitors to guide decision making and improvements. Please take a moment now, and help make your Market better, by participating in our
annual survey (Participants are eligible for a prize drawing of gift certificates and Market t-shirts!)

25% Off at Madura and Bobolink
Appropriately placed in Memorial Aisle, Madura Farms reports this week they're offering 25% off their produce for all veterans with ID. Also, Bobolink Dairy & Bakehouse reports their Drumm, Jean Louis, and Baudolino cheeses are 25% off through Aug. 3.

Shawangunk Wine Trail & Tousey Winery
Our wineries Adair Vineyards, Whitecliff Vineyards, and Warwick Valley Winery & Black Dirt Distillery are all on the Shawangunk Wine Trail. To enjoy the weather, scenery and wines click here for more information. NOTE: you won't find Columbia County's
Tousey Winery on that tour. Conveniently Tousey comes to us with their fine wines as this week's visiting winery.

Berry Good News
We are at peak with berries. Breezy Hill Orchard and Mead Orchard have blueberries, and Newgate Farms offers an incredible variety of special berries including gooseberries, currants, red and black raspberries, black berries and more. These berries are a fleeting crop so get them while they last!

Maupston Design Studio
Anna Upston will be in with her beautiful handspun yarns on Saturday. Its hot this month, but it won't be forever. Looking to the fall, perhaps start up a knitting project with some really unique materials from Maupton this week.

Da Da Da & Westchester Engineering for Kids
Our Market Music Directors, Andy Goodman and Stuart Vance, will be joined Saturday by their friend David Harter in the fun guitar and vocal trio Da Da Da. And in the Kids Event area we have one of last year's most popular participants: Westchester Engineering For Kids. Be sure to stop by so your child can experiment with some fun science based activities.

When its Hot: Drink More Good
Jason Schuler of Drink More Good reports that a limited supply of their rarest soda syrup is headed to the Market Saturday. If you want their delicious Orange Pop soda syrup get the Market early and stock up.
