Community Forum Examines District Facilities

Nearly 50 community members participated in the Community Forum on Facility Upgrades and Improvements that followed the Pleasantville Board of Education’s November 5 meeting. Buildings and Grounds Director Steve Chamberlain reviewed a list of facility repairs, replacements, and upgrades that were to be assessed by the forum participants – including the Middle School roof, the District’s three turf fields and the track, security projects, masonry and asphalt repairs, and more – and Athletic Director John Bauerlein provided usage statistics for the turf fields. Superintendent Mary Fox-Alter noted that “tonight’s conversation is not about costs, but about what District facilities might require.” The participants then broke into four groups to discuss the projects, rate them in importance, and add any other improvements that were not on the list. The Board’s student interns – Adam Choy, Ali Jeanty, Rosie Reilly, and Billy Schiavone – acted as facilitators.

At the end of the discussion period, a member of each group provided feedback to the Board. All four groups put the replacement of the Middle School roof, the turf fields, and the track at the top of their “to-do” lists; security-related projects (a security vestibule at Bedford Road School and Voice over Internet communications systems there and at the Middle School) and masonry and asphalt repairs also ranked high. No group offered any additional improvements, but one did urge the Board to “incorporate energy efficiency” wherever possible. One group spokesperson noted that the forum was “a fantastic idea”; another ended with a thank you “for allowing us to get together tonight. That’s what Pleasantville is all about.”

The presentations by Mr. Chamberlain and Mr. Bauerlein and the forum feedback session can be viewed at www.pctv76.org as part of the Board of Education Meeting of November 5, 2013.
