“What is Westchester Wheelabrator?” you may ask. The answer is that it’s where all our trash goes. (Some of you may know it as the Resource Recovery Facility at Charles Point.)
It’s an amazing, high-tech operation where our waste is burned cleanly to create energy. The energy is then sold to the utility and used to power thousands of Westchester homes.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency stated in April 2011 that waste-to-energy plants like the Wheelabrator produce electricity with "less environmental impact than almost any other source of electricity."
Did you know? Our Westchester facility was featured in a NOVA’s "Making Stuff: Cleaner" episode on Feb. 3, 2011 (segment 5 of 6 at 40:30 minutes), hosted by New York Times technology columnist and CBS News Correspondent and author David Pogue.
