Restricting Single-Use Plastic Shopping Bags in Pleasantville

It's the responsible thing to do. It's the right thing to do.

On Monday, January 27, 2014 PleasantvilleRecycles made a proposal to the Village Board to restrict the use of single-use plastic shopping bags in Pleasantville. It's time.

In Westchester County, Rye, Larchmont and Mamaroneck have already passed plastic shopping bag ordinances. Ossining, New Castle and Hastings on Hudson are currently developing plastic bag restrictions similar to the one we propose.

You can view our presentation at "The Village Board Meeting of January 27, 2014" on demand on PCTV.

Over the next 4-6 weeks the Pleasantville Village Board will go through the process of working on the details of the proposed ordinance. Once the ordinance has been approved and finalized, a public hearing will be scheduled. You will be able to voice your support and/or concern at that time. We will update our website once the date for the hearing has been announced.

We know you have questions and we have created a FAQ on our website so you can learn more about our reasons to restrict single-use plastic shopping bags in Pleasantville. If we haven't answered your question, let us know at info@pleasantvillereycles.org. Here are two short videos that we recommend:

The Immortal Plastic Bag (6:20): A short film about plastic bags in NYC. It's lively and really informative. Some of the details relate just to NYC but it will give you a great overview of the situation.
The Majestic Plastic Bag (4:00): A mock documentary about the life cycle of the plastic bag. It's hilarious. Narrated by Academy Award-winner Jeremy Irons.

We also encourage you to watch the film Bag It, The Movie (Is Your Life Too Plastic?) on demand on PCTV (45 mins.). It is also available via PCTV for a limited time on Cable Vision channel 76 and Verizon channel 36 at 9:42am, 3:42pm, 9:42pm. About the movie: Try going a day without plastic. In this touching and often flat-out-funny film, we follow "everyman" Jeb Berrier as he embarks on a global tout to unravel the complexities of our plastic world. What starts as a film about plastic bags evolves into a wholesale investigation into plastic and its effect on our waterways, oceans and even our own bodies. We see how our crazy-for-plastic world has finally caught up to us and what we can do about it. Today. Right now.
