Another Pedestrian Struck on Route 9 in Ossining

Just days following the serious injury of a man crossing Route 9 on foot, comes another car collision with a pedestrian:

A 47-year-old Ossining woman was in the crosswalk, almost to the curb, crossing South Highland at the intersection of Everett Avenue when she was struck by a car.

"We don't know the status of her with the hospital this morning," said Det. Sgt. Jeff Giorgio of Village of Ossining police. As of their emergency response Monday around 5:45 p.m. she appeared to suffer a "possible head injury" with possible other unknown injuries.

Giorgio said the car, driven southbound by a 77-year-old Ossining woman, struck the woman going from the east to the west side of the roadway on the right side of her body, possibly her leg, which caused her to fall to the ground. "The pedestrian struck her head on the pavement," he said.

Giorgio said the victim was breathing on her own and didn't need CPR, though responders administered aid on the scene. She was transported to Westchester County Medical Center by Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Police did not believe speeding to be a factor. There is no stop sign or stoplight on the Route 9 portion of that intersection. There is a stop sign coming off Everett.

Officials shut down the roadway at the height of rush hour for hours to conduct their accident investigation, as they do, he said, "when there's the possibility of serious injury or death."

Theses incidents join a recent spate of pedestrian accidents and fatalities around the region, including one last week in Tarrytown that left two women hospitalized, one in critical condition.
