Concrete Falling from "Worst Bridge in Westchester" Damages Cars on the Thruway at Rush Hour

State police said several cars were damaged by chunks falling off the Ashford Avenue overpass but no lanes had to be closed.

Several cars northbound on the New York State Thruway were damaged by concrete falling from the Ashford Avenue bridge.

The cars were all pulled off to the side, so that traffic could flow unimpeded—except for rubbernecking.

Police are investigating the incident, which occurred during evening rush hour.

Rebuilding the 62-year-old structure, which is owned by Westchester County, is under discussion. A forum last month detailed the options;  At the event, County Legislator Mary Jane Shimsky called the structure “the worst county-owned bridge in Westchester—and not by just a little.”

Editor's note: The bridge and parts of the thruway were closed for investigation for a period of time on Friday evening.

This latest incident can only speed up the timetable for serious repair - which means restricting the lanes on the bridge, if not closing it altogether for a bit. It was a traffic nightmare when the bridge was simply repaved, back in the 90s. This is just one more reason why the Rivertowns Square project, bringing hundreds of extra cars every day - as well as supermarket-serving trucks crawling up on 9A - cannot be allowed to go through.

I completely agree with Dr Schlesinger....fixing the surrounding infrastructure should be more of a priority before anymore development goes on!!!
