$20k in damages!!! Community service won't help unless it's to the village. Then again, $20k in minimum wage community service is over 2700+ hrs. 3 options: 1) kids should go to jail, 2) parents pay 3) garnish the kids wages until it's paid off, or 4) all of the above.

Seriously? Felony charges??? Great so this will follow them for the rest of their lives. Obviously I don't know all of the details but this seems pretty severe! What has happened to us? In my youth this would have been handled in a manner that would have fit the act of mischief. Why not a summer of community service? We need to guide our children not punish them severely for a moment of poor judgement!

Does anybody wonder why it cost $20k to make a 100 ft. long sidewalk? Most likely felony charges will be dismissed and restitution and EXTENSIVE community service will be the punishment. As it should be.

20K ?? come on people is the cement treated with gold. It used to be that if a kid did something like this , people would laugh it off and move on. Not my town they want to prosecute two kids on felony charges. I think the charge is assaulting a sidewalk. I am not condoning what the did but man a felony? How about letting them fix the sidewalk themselves.

I agree with Bill. First, shouldn't the contarctor be assessed felony charges for overcharging the village? Second, what a crock - felony charges b/c a couple of kids walked on wet cement - please. Bill's suggestion that the kids should be required to fix the cement (with the contractor's supervison) is perfect. Much better than bogus community service.

Lynch 'em, I say. Then, draw & quarter them for good measure!

The real felony is the overcharging by the contractor. Shame on him, what a racket. Did the village do it's research before accepting the bid? What kid hasn't written his initials or made some type of print in cement. From the pictures it just looks like they walked across it. For 20k the village ought to pay a cop overtime to sit by the wet cement and watch it dry. Give the families some sand paper.

That's the probllem with our society today - no one takes responsibility for anything. It's time to teach our kids responsibility and respect, regardless of the charges by the contractor.

Update: The sidewalk was repaved yesterday and the village plans to seek full restitution: http://patch.com/A-sxYV

My 12 year old son, a straight A student who's never been in trouble, was charged with criminal mischief two days ago for writing his initials in wet cement on a sidewalk. The writing was 3"x 3" on a 5 foot patch of cement. The officer handcuffed, searched and arrested him. Should he have been scolded and made to pay for and repair the damage? Absolutely. But NOT arrested and charged with a crime. I am angry because 8 years ago my brother's 3 year old little boy was raped and murdered by a child molester. The coroner told us that the sodomy had caused internal hemorrhaging. It took 12 to 24 hours for my little nephew to bleed to death internally. Though the boyfriend of my brother's ex-wife was the only suspect, and the only man to be with the boy in the 24 hours before his death, no charges were ever brought because the police so badly botched the investigation. And prior to this my brother had been fighting for sole custody of his three boys because his ex-wife is an alcoholic with bipolar disorder and an unfit mother. The "justice" system would not listen to my brother until his youngest was dead. Now my brother is a shell of the man I used to know. The gruesome death of his baby destroyed him. AND the molester has been free all these years to rape who knows how many other children. Thank God we don't have to worry about my kid putting his initials in wet cement ever again, though! The cops are on top of the truly dangerous crime in the Lake and Porter Counties Indiana.
