A smokey fire in a Hawthorne house late Monday morning spread to the foliage surrounding the home, a witness told Patch this afternoon—and left the home with "extensive" damage, according to Hawthorne Assistant Fire Chief Joe LaGrippo.

Firefighters from Hawthorne, Thornwood, Pleasantville, Briarcliff Manor, Irvington and the surrounding areas responded to reports of a blaze at 182 Astor Ave. in Hawthorne at about 11:30 a.m.

"The fire was heavy when we arrived, it was through the roof," LaGrippo said.

By noon, flames at the scene were no longer visible—but a second-floor window was smashed, and fire investigators were combing through the home to determine the cause. LaGrippo said the home's chimney may have been responsible, though the official cause is still undetermined.

Con Edison, Mount Pleasant Police and Westchester County Cause & Origin Team members are at the scene.

Peymon Farjam, a neighbor living at 183 Astor Ave., told Patch he and his family witnessed the flames.

"My mom went on the deck and saw smoke coming from the chimney," he said. "It kind of freaked her out."

Farjam noted nearby trees were ablaze soon after.

"The flames got pretty high, [but firefighters] put it out pretty quickly," he added.

Farjam said his neighbor was home during the fire, and that the man is currently staying with them next door.

Fire officials told Patch one Thornwood interior firefighter suffered minor injuries, and was hospitalized. The man was cut while working inside the home, and required stitches on his chin.
