Identity Theft Crimes Reported in Briarcliff

Two Briarcliff Manor residents were victims of identify theft in unrelated cases, according to village police.

A resident of Long Hill Road West called police Nov. 6 to report that she had received a bank card connected to a new account that was not hers. Police said someone had opened an account using the victim's Social Security number.

A Hazelton Circle resident told police Nov. 1 that someone had used her account at a New York City store to buy cell phones.

Such cell phones are often used for illegal purposes, police said. A huge  ring of identity thefts connected to cell phone purchases was broken up by federal investigators in August, according to this report in Forbes Magazine.
