Six Hospitalized After Tire Blowout in Sleepy Hollow

Six injured, four cars damaged on Saturday afternoon.

One driver's bad luck ruined the day of many on Bedford Road in Sleepy Hollow, near the Pocantico Hills border, on Saturday afternoon.

Sleepy Hollow Police Lieutenant Anthony Bueti reported at approximately 4 p.m. on August 11, a car driving eastbound on Bedford Road in Sleepy Hollow experienced what may have been a tire blow-out. The alleged blow-out led the driver, a village resident, to lose control of his vehicle, slam head on into one car and hit another parked car, Bueti said.

Six people were taken to Westchester Medical Center by several ambulances, said Bueti, where they were treated and released. The most serious injury among them was one passenger sustaining a cut to the forehead, said Bueti.

The driver attributed the accident to a blow-out, as did a witness, who did not want to go on the record but said she heard a noise that sounded like a tire exploding.

Four cars in total were damaged, including two heavily damaged. One parked car was spun into following the head-on collision of two cars. A fourth car sustained minor damages from flying debris from the collision.

Two cars had to be towed. Police managed to keep one lane of traffic open, said Bueti, though responders were still clearing the mess around 5 p.m., when this photo and video was taken.

The driver was not charged or issued any summonses, Bueti said.
