A 62-year-old Peekskill man is accused of getting behind the wheel while intoxicated and driving on the wrong side of the road, state police from the Cortlandt barracks said.
Officials arrested the man at about 2:30 a.m. Friday, after they received a report of a vehicle traveling north in the southbound lanes of Route 9 in Peekskill.
State police units closed southbound Route 9, near Welcher Avenue, "to avoid a possible head-on collision between motorists and the suspect vehicle," authorities said.
Police located the vehicle, which was reportedly traveling at 90 mph in a 55-mph zone. The driver stopped as troopers drove north in the northbound lanes alongside the car, which was headed north in southbound lanes.
The defendant is due in Peekskill City Court Jan. 30. He is facing a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated, as well as several traffic infractions. His blood-alcohol level was 0.09-percent, police said. The legal limit is 0.08.
