Bob Turner Will Try to Unseat Senator Gillibrand

Congressman Turner is throwing his hat into the GOP Senate race for Gillibrand's seat.

Republican Rep. Bob Turner says he wants the seat that Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand currently holds. Gillibrand's Senate seat is up for grabs in November.

Turner's last minute announcement comes just a few days before the GOP chooses its U.S. Senate candidates. Turner is now in the mix with Rye Town Supervisor Joe Carvin, Nassau Comptroller George Maragos and lawyer Wendy Long.

Last year Turner came out on top during a special election, which was held to replace Democrat Anthony Weiner in the House.

Here is the statement that the Turner camp released a few minutes ago:

“I will travel to the Republican State Convention in Rochester later this week and humbly ask for the Republican nomination for the United States Senate. I will respectfully ask for the Conservative nomination a few days later at that Party’s convention. I have made my intentions known to the other Republican candidates in this race.

I ran for the House six months ago as a private citizen fed up with what is happening in Washington. I could not sit and watch career politicians sink my nation deeper into economic crisis. Brooklyn and Queens voters, of all political parties, graciously responded by sending me to Congress. It now appears that their district has been eliminated.

There is serious work to be done to get this economy back on track, and I will not walk away from that work now. I will run for the Senate, and I will run to win.”

I think he figures he's going to lose re-election for his current seat and that he might as well go big or go home. And I think he'll go home.

Yes, no doubt. And the tentative Congressional registricting, I believe that the old Anthony Weiner (no relation, I might add, to me) district was broken up and will no longer exist as it did when he won a sparsely participated in special election.

one can only hope reason triumphs and Turner wins.
