Donate School Supplies to Operation Backpack

A Westchester Girl Scout came up with the idea to assist families in need with school supplies.

Thanks to a White Plains Girl Scout, families throughout Westchester will be able to send their kids back-to-school with backpacks, pencils and notebooks.

Amanda Grant of from Greenburgh’s Troop 1936, reached out to County Executive Robert P. Astorino about the need for school supplies in low-income families.

Though that letter, Operation Backpack—a school supplies drive for needy families in Westchester County—was born.

Astorino said Grant, who is working on her Silver Star Award for scouting, addressed a need in the community.

“She is living up the highest principle of what Girl Scouting is about,” he said in a statement.

The young scout said in a statement that "education is our future, and achieving this begins with having basic tools such as school supplies. As a Girl Scout, I feel it is my responsibility to help those in need, and that is why I choose to participate in a school supply drive.”

Westchester's Department of Social Services, Kids Kloset, Operation Prom and WFAS radio are sponsoring the program.

Operation Backpack will collect school supplies for children and families that the Westchester DSS serves.
