Ossining Legislative District Change

The possible redistricting of Ossining is sparking heated debate.

A state task force made new proposed legislative district maps public yesterday. If the changes take place, the Town of Ossining would be taken from what is now turf and taken over by what is now Rockland County Sen. David Carlucci's domain.

Patch has reached out to a number of officials regarding the proposed change. So far we have heard from Sen. Oppenheimer, Carlucci and Assemblyman George Latimer:

"The Senate Republican proposal does a great disservice to Ossining by placing our community in a Rockland County District. ‘Community of Interest’ is supposed to be a major factor in drawing districts. This underscores the need for an independent redistricting process. Ossining belongs with Westchester," said Oppenheimer.

"I Think it's a terrible mistake to place Ossining with Rockland. Very cynical redistricting ploy. I suspect a court will reverse that action. Don't know yet if I'll run for Senate seat. Evaluating the race in light of these proposed lines...and how they might yet be changed," said Latimer via his mobile device.

Senator Carlucci said: “It’s been an honor this year serving the people of the 38th State Senate district that includes Rockland and Orange Counties.

With nearly 360,000 residents currently residing in my district, unfortunately I knew a large portion of the population would be lost as a result of the redistricting process.

Still it is upsetting to be losing friends and neighbors in communities that I have visited countless times. Which is why today more then ever I believe we need independent redistricting written into our state’s constitution to prevent this hyper partisan process from devolving into chaos.

Governor Cuomo has stated that he will likely be vetoing the proposed district lines. It appears that we are just at the beginning of a very long process and I will continue to work hard for the residents who elected me to fight for them in Albany," said Carlucci.

Go to Facebook and join the group "Ossining is NOT in Rockland County" to protest this obvious gerrymandering.

Briarcliff and Ossining have very different issues from Rockland. We would be sidelined. This is not a good plan for our residents.

Totally asinine. It's this total lack of sensibility that is driving people to detest politics and politicians. A pox on all who were involved in this proposal. You are putting my community in a district that is across a major river and with communities that we share few regional concerns. I am livid!

This defies any kind of common sense, hurting the communities with no logoical reasoning other than outright obvious politcial manipulation. How this was even conceived is byond imagination
