Poll: Was Obama Correct to Stop Deporting Some Illegal Immigrants?

Surprise announcement by Homeland Security will allow some residents to stay in the United States if they came here as children.

In a move expected to affect up to 800,000 people, President Barack Obama announced Friday a plan to allow some young illegal immigrants the ability to apply for temporary legal status and work permits.

The move would stop deportations for undocumented people under certain conditions. To be eligible, they must have come to the United States under the age of 16 and lived in the US for at least five years. They must be in school, have graduated from high school, or have been honorably discharged from the U.S. military. In addition, those applying must not have been convicted of any felony or significant misdemeanors.

The move raised the ire of many immediately—including one reporter who heckled the president during the speech. But Obama said of the illegal immigrants, "They are Americans in their hearts, in their minds, in every single way but one—on paper." The president said the move is not "amnesty" and encouraged Congress to pass a broader immigration bill.

Some see the move as a political one designed to mollify Latino voters in the upcoming presidential election.

What do you think of the president's actions?

Amnesty programs have NOT worked in the past. There was very little participation. Most of the illegals in this country don't want to actually live here. They want to make money to send home and then go back to their county to live there, living off the money they made HERE.

The only thing he gets right is his name because it is written on his shirt, other than that, morally bankrupt.

Theresa - it all sounds good, but as Mike said, Obama didn't think about who was going to pay for this, it just doesn't work. The insurance companies are already running scared as they are afraid they will go under (which will most likely happen), hence, EVERY health insurance premium has already skyrocketed (ours literally doubled and we have a high deductible plan). Many people now cannot afford their payments and are suffering, physician reimbursements have plummeted so much that many can't afford to pay their skyrocketing malpractice insurance and who pays, not just them, but you as the patient, who will receive less time, less quality care as they have to see 10x as many patients to make the same salary. Perhaps you should ask the Canadians who have socialized medicine how many months they have to wait to get a procedure done. Additionally, Obamacare may be deemed "unconstitutional" by the Supreme Court anyway. Secondly, bottom line (whatever the semantics) under Obama's administration, unemployment is sky high, much higher than what he "inherited", oh and so are the gas prices and the deficit. We were much better off with what he "inherited" than what he has brought to the table.

Joe, I thought this went through already, but realized it did not. On the contrary, I did not drink the "hope and change kool-aid" as many Independents had in 08. He had no experience or vision that made any real sense to me and he turned out to be so much more destructive than I ever could have imagined. After he was elected, I tried to find something positive in it and electing an African-American President was incredible and showed our countries true colors (no pun intended). Unfortunately, O used the race card whenever it suited him politically and served to divide this country even further
