Briarcliff Schools Accepting Energy Committee Applications

Six community members will serve alongside students and a teacher to help make Briarcliff greener.

Charged with looking into ways for the district to save money through energy efficiencies, the Briarcliff Manor Board of Education formed at its July 29 meeting a new ad hoc energy committee.

According to Board President Jennifer Rosen, the committee grew out of the subcommittee that worked with district administrators on facilities recommendations for the 2012 bond proposal.

Rosen said the board will choose six community members to serve with one faculty member, a Middle School student, a High School student, and a Board of Education member on the committee that will meet at least four times a year.

"We thought that we also have students in the school who are in various clubs in the middle school and high school who are very energy conscious," she explained. "It's a great way for them to learn a little bit more...from people who are actually in the business.

The Board's resolution describes the committee's charge to include identifying:

1. Electrical use savings and efficiencies
2. Heating savings and efficiencies
3. Weatherizing savings and efficiencies
4. Lighting savings and efficiencies
5. Green power initiatives such as solar power
6. Recycling initiatives; and
7. Composting initiatives

The committee application (a copy is incorporated in the July 29 agenda) asks residents to share any "specific energy efficiency and savings and/or green initiatives or experience" as well as to explain why they want to serve.
