Superintendent commends standout musicians.

Superintendent Neal Miller announced the recognition of students and teachers in the music program for recent achievements on Monday.

"These students have achieved some great things in the field of music," he said. "Not only are we honoring our students, we are honoring their teachers who are very proud of them."

Principal Nadine McDermott introduced General Music and Chorus Teacher Wilma Messenger, who has worked with students throughout the district for seven years.

"I'm thrilled that these fifth graders from Todd School have been selected to sing with the honor choir at ACDA Eastern Regional Conference in Providence, RI, in February," said Messenger.

Jillian Agona, Madeline Albert, Kelly Hoooper, Komal Keerthy, Benjamin Kupka, Sophia McGlew, Caroline Pennacchio, Melissa Goldberg, Allison Greenberg have been selected for the ACDA Junior High Chorus.

Emma Kuhn, Danielle Jacoby and Sophia Sarsella will be performing with the ACDA Elementary Chorus in 2012.

Additionally, John Alecci has been selected to participate in the ACDA High School Latino Repertoire Chorus, where he will perform mostly Spanish selections.

Chorus Instructor Dr. John Banks spoke about Senior Alecci's longstanding choral achievements.

"He not only made the ACDA regional chorus," Dr. Banks explained, adding Alecci received "a perfect 100" in his audition and was chosen for the All-State Chorus.

Soprano Jamie Brandel also received a 100 on her audition, announced Banks, and was therefore selected to serve as an alternate for the 2011 All-State Conference.

Another honored musician was Senior , a violinist who was selected for the second year in a row to perform with the All-State Conference this December.

"To be selected twice is basically science fiction. it just doesn't happen," said Conductor Anna Ostrofsky. "She's a remarkable musician."

Miller congratulated the students and thanked the teachers for working "above and beyond" in the music department, awarding them all with certificates of appreciation.

"Congratulations to all of you," he said.
