Pleasantville Kindergartner Gives Back to BRS

Kaavya Girdhar donated prize money and funds of her own to her elementary school.

Pleasantville's Kaavya Girdhar found herself $100 richer when she won a design contest.

"Every year, our Student Council sponsors different events and one of the things they sponsored this year is a poster contest through the Firemen's Association of the State of New York (FASNY)," revealed Dr. Cindy Kramer, assistant principal. "The students were invited to create a poster on fire safety."

Last month, the school received a letter announcing Girdhar was one of the contest winners. She received a plaque and $100 check from FASNY.

"Kaavya has decided to donate the money back to BRS," said Kramer. "She wanted to donate $50 to our library program and $50 to our art program and we were so thrilled and so proud of her for doing that."

In addition, Girdhar decided the day of the June 12 board of education meeting that she wanted to give an additional $50 of her own money to the BRS music program.

"We're so proud of her generosity and her altruism," Kramer said, "and we just wanted to recognize that."

Girdhar presented three checks to the board before running to the podium and hugging Kramer and BRS Principal Peggy Galotti.

Said Mary Fox-Alter, "That was simply fabulous."
