On a playing field measuring 12 square feet, robots battled each other by picking colored plastic rings off a structure and carrying them across the field to stack them on another, gathering points for doing so within a measured time period. Then they turned on each other, trying to lift their opponents off the ground.
The 2012-13 FIRST Tech Challenge came to the Pace University gymnasium in Pleasantville on Sunday and dozens of high school teams from across the Hudson Valley competed in matches with robots they built themselves.
Qualifying matches were held by pairing teams from different school togetherto compete against other teams. Winners moved on to the elimination rounds en route to the championship matches. Winning teams are invited to compete in the World Championship in St. Louis this April.
