This Week: Weigh in on Ossining Superintendent Search

There will be four open community forums to discuss superintendent criteria this week.

The following is from Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES:

The Ossining Board of Education wants to hear from all members of the community—parents, retirees, business owners, civic leaders, homeowners, longtime residents and newcomers—about the type of leader they would like to see as the school district’s next superintendent.

Dr. Phyllis Glassman, who has served as superintendent of Ossining Union Free School District since 2007, has announced her intention to retire in mid-January. Deputy Superintendent Raymond Sanchez will serve as Interim Superintendent while the search takes place.

“As we move to the next phase of our search for a new superintendent, it is important to gather community input on the qualifications, leadership qualities and core values that you believe our new leader should have,” said Board of Education President Bill Kress. “To that end, we’ve scheduled several meetings for the public to give this input in person.”

The meetings are the next step in a careful process that began with a request for proposals (RFP) from leading search firms. After evaluating responses to the RFP, interviewing candidates from leading search firms and checking references from districts that have used them, the Board of Education selected Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES as its search consultant.

BOCES will conduct four open community forums to gather input from the public, with two sessions featuring a Spanish language interpreter. The meetings, which will be held in the cafeteria at Roosevelt School, are scheduled for:

  • Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 7:30 p.m. (in English)

  • Thursday, Nov. 29 at 7:30p.m. (in Spanish)

  • Saturday, Dec. 1 at 10 a.m. (in English)

  • Saturday, Dec. 1 at 11:30 a.m. (in Spanish)
  • At the recommendation of the search consultants, the forums will be conducted by BOCES without members of the Board of Education present. BOCES will then report back to the Board of Education on the community’s input.

Community members who are unable to attend any of the open forums may still comment on their preferences for a new superintendent by commenting through an online survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/oufsdsearch or by e-mailing the Board of Education at BOE@ossining.k12.ny.us.
