Boys youth hoops

entry that competes in the boys seventh-grade AA division of the Tri-County Basketball League is off to a red-hot start, garnering wins in its first two games.

Those wins came against Scarsdale 61-40 Dec. 11 and Peekskill 55-39 Dec. 9.

Setters Fall Short to Dowling

The below was submitted by the Pace University Sports Information Department:

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.- The Pace women’s basketball team came up short in 70-67 non-conference loss to the Golden Lions of Dowling College. The Setters fall to 7-2 on the season, while Dowling remains undefeated at 7-0.

Dowling jumped out to an early 13-7 lead on the Setters but Pace answered with a 9-0 run. Kerri White (Flushing, NY/Mary Louis Academy/Manhattan College) hit a triple, while Carol Johnson (New City, NY/Cardinal Spellman) hit a pair of free throws and a lay-up as Pace took a 16-13 lead. Pace held a slim lead for the rest of the half with the largest lead coming at 32-26 with 2:12 to play as the Setters would take a 36-31 lead in the break.

Pace would add to their halftime lead as they would pull ahead by seven points at 48-41 with 13:37 left in the game.Brittany Shields (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) hit a lay-up to put the Setters up 50-44 with 12:30 remaining in the game but Dowling would rally. The Golden Lions used a 9-0 burst to take a three points lead at 53-30 with 8:22 left in the game.

Margo Hackett (Pawling, NY/Pawling) pulled the Setters back even at 53 with a trifecta to spark a 8-0 Setter’ rally. Maral Javadifar (Flushing, NY/Mary Louis Academy) hit a pair of free throws and converted a three-point play to give Pace a 58-53 lead. The Golden Lions answered and took a one-point lead at 60-59, but Pace would tie the score at 60. Dowling would get the next six points but Pace hung around on a White triple to trail 66-63 with just over a minute to play.

Dowling’s Connie Simmons put the Golden Lions up 68- 63 with a lay-up but a jumper Allison Cleary (New Windsor, NY/Cornwall Central) and a steal by White, who would make both shots at the line, pulled the Setters to within one with 16 seconds to play. Dowling would hit a pair of free throws with under 10 seconds on the clock and Pace would turn the ball over as time expired.

For Pace, Shields recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while White finished with 14 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Brianna Harris (Brentwood, NY/Mary Louis Academy) totaled 11 points, five boards and four steals, while Johnson tallied 10 points and four assists.

The Setters are back in action on Saturday, December 17 when Pace will host the Greyhounds of Assumption College at the Goldstein Fitness Center at 1:30 pm.
