Setters Split With #21 Southern Connecticut

NEW HAVEN, Conn.- Lauren Bell (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free) blasted her team-best fourth homerun of the season as Pace took the softball nightcap in a twin bill split with #21 Southern Connecticut State University Owls in Northeast-10 Conference action. The Owls took game one 9-1 in six innings, while the Setters won in the second game 3-2. Pace moves to 13-3 on the season and 3-1 in the NE-10, while the Owls are now 15-3 and 3-1 in conference play.

In the opener, the Setters got their lone run in the first inning as Nicole Schultheis (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) singled and moved to second on a sac bunt. Schultheis advanced to third on a Bell single and scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Hana Wright (Hillsboro, OR/Valley Catholic). The Owls rallied in the bottom of the inning with five runs with four coming on a grand slam homerun. Southern Connecticut added one in the fourth and three more in the sixth to take the opener.

Wright went 2-for-2 in the opener with Schultheis went 1-for-3. On the mound, Caitlin McCann (San Mateo, CA/Notre Dame) tossed a complete game, allowing nine runs and struck out two to fall to 3-2 on the season.

In the nightcap, Jeane Drury (Flanders, NJ/Morris Catholic) and Bell singled with one out in the first inning. Wright singled to drive in Drury as Bell moved to third on the play. Natalie Gellos (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) drove in Bell on a groundout to give Pace a 2-0 lead. Bell made it 3-0 in favor of Pace with a solo homerun in the third inning. The Owls added two runs in the fifth but Pace starter Chelsea Shea (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) closed the door and kept the Owls off the board the rest of the way.

For the game, Bell went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI for Pace. On the hill, Shea (3-1) tossed a complete game as she allowing two runs on six hits, while fanning six. 


Setters Split with Skyhawks

PLEASANTVILLE, NY- The Pace baseball team split wins with the Skyhawks of Stonehill College in a Northeast-10 Conference and non-divisional match up.  Pace took the first win 10-2 while the Skyhawks took the night cap at 9-7.  Pace improves their record to 9-8 overall while Stonehill improves to 12-7 overall. 

Both teams were scoreless through the first four innings before Joe Solomeno(Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) doubled and brought two runs in for the Setters.  Stonehill scored a run in the sixth and one more in the eighth to tie it up at two. The Setters rallied with eight runs in the eighth inning to solidify the win. Patrick Chaputian (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) drove in pair of runs with a single in the inning, while Brandon Martineson (Warwick, NY/Warwick) and Solomeno had two-run doubles as the Setters rallied with as big inning.

Solomeno went 3-for-5 with four RBI’s and a run scored while Tyler Collins (Stamford, CT/Trinity Catholic) went 2-for-4, scored two runs and an RBI. Martineson and Chaputian went 2-for-5, scored a run and drove in two apiece.

Neil Pezzullo (Harwich, MA/Harwich) tossed for 6 2/3 innings, allowed just four hits and one run while striking out eight. Edward Byrne (Yonkers, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) pitched two innings, gave up three hits, no runs and struck out five to improve to 3-1 on the season. 

Stonehill got on the board early in the second game as two players scored off of singles.  Steve Sterlacci (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the third to put the Setters on the board.  The Skyhawks answered with another run in the fourth and fifth to put them up three runs.  Pace rallied in the fifth as Chris Roemer (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) and Martineson got the Setters offense going with RBI singles.  Collins then singled to center field and brought in Roemer and Chaputian before Charlie Galasso (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) topped it off with an RBI double to give Pace a 6-4 lead.

Stonehill answered back in the seventh inning to bring five more runs as the Skyhawks jumped out to a 9-6 lead. Collins recorded one of his two triples on the day to bring Solomeno home for the Setters in the seventh.  The Skyhawks held on in the ninth inning as the Setters left a pair of runners on base.  

In the nightcap, Collins went 3-for-5 with three RBI’s while Roemer, Martineson and Galasso each added an RBI.  Jonathan Hornung (Calverton, NY/Riverhead) threw for six innings, allowed nine hits, six runs and struck out two.  Tom McIntosh (Stamford, CT/Stamford) tossed for three innings, allowed two hits and struck out three.


Setters Rally In Extra Innings Win Over Nyack

POMONA, N.Y.- The Setters rallied with five runs in the tenth inning as Pace defeated the Nyack College Warriors 7-4 in non-conference baseball action. Pace improves their record to 8-7, while the Warriors fall to 9-7 on the season.

Pace took the lead in the opening inning as Chris Roemer (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) singled, stole second and eventually scored on a single by Patrick Chaputian (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore). The Setters added to their lead in the third as Kyle Turnier (Waterford, CT/Waterford) doubled with two outs, moved to third on a balk and scored on a base hit by James Pjura (Shelton, CT/Shelton). Nyack answered with a run in the third and a run in the fifth to tie the game at two.

The teams headed into extra innings as the Setters’ bats came alive in the top of the tenth. Chaputian and Pjura both had RBI singles with the big hit coming from Ian Wukitsch (Morristown, NJ/Morristown), who drove in two runs with a single. Joe Solomeno (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) also drove in a run with a single to cap the scoring in the inning. The Warriors answered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs but fell short of a comeback.

For the Setters, Roemer scored twice, while Chaputian went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI’s. Turnier went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, while Pjura went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI’s. On the mound, Michael Tamburino (Baldwin, NY/Holy Trinity) tossed seven innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, while striking out four. Brian Sundberg (Westbury, NY/WT Clarke) went the final three innings, allowing two runs on five hits, while fanning two to improve to 2-1 on the season.
