Gellos Leads Setters: Daily Sports Digest, March 14, 2012

Softball Remains Unbeaten, Sweep Barton

WILSON, N.C.- Natalie Gellos (Seattle, WA/Holy Name Academy) went 4-for-6 in two games as the Setters swept a twin bill over Barton College. Pace won the opener 9-0 in five innings and took game two 5-3. The Setters improve to 4-0, while Barton falls to 7-10 on the season.

The Setters scored in all five innings as Lauren Bell (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free) doubled in the first and scored on a double by Gellos. In the second, Samantha Garcia (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Rancho Cucamonga) walked and moved to second on a sac bunt. Lana Buchbinder (San Francisco, CA/George Washington) doubles in Garcia for a 2-0 Setter lead.

Pace added two more in the third on run scoring singles by Gellos and Rachael McMahon (Corona, CA/Esperanza). The Setters broke the game open in the fourth as Sabrina Gonzalez (Oxnard, CA/Ventura College) blasted a solo homerun, while Garcia drove in two more runs later in the inning with a double. Pace tacked on two more runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

Caitlin McCann (San Mateo, CA/Notre Dame) tossed four innings, allowing two hits to move her record to 2-0 on the season. Colby Hochmuth (Delanson, NY/Duanesburg) tossed a scoreless final inning.

In the nightcap, Barton struck first with a run in the second but the Setters answered as they scored an unearned run in the third to tie the game at one. In the fourth, Pace loaded the bases with no outs. Gonzalez doubled to score a pair of runs, while Nicole Schultheis (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) drove in another run with an RBI groundout.

The Setters tacked on another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly byJeane Drury (Flanders, NJ/Morris Catholic). Barton tacked on a run in the last two innings but Kelly Fisher (Castle Rock, CO/Douglas County) closed the door as she tossed a complete game. Fisher (1-0) allowed six hits and three runs, while striking out three.


Baseball Falls to Stonehill

WINTER PARK, Fla.- The Setters fell to the Skyhawks of Stonehill College 7-3 in non-conference action. Pace fall to 4-4 on the season, while the Skyhawks improve to 7-4 overall.

Stonehill built an 6-0 lead as they score a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and tallied three runs in the sixth inning. James Pjura (Shelton, CT/Shelton) got the Setters on the board in the sixth with a solo homerun. Pjura also drew a walk in the eighth and scored on single by Patrick Chaputian (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore). Pace also added a run in the ninth as they capitalized on a Skyhawks error.

On the hill for Pace, Jonathan Silva (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) tossed 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, while striking out six. Jonathan Chudy (Goshen, NY/Goshen) pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing three unearned runs, while Jonathan Hornung (Calverton, NY/Riverhead) pitched one inning, allowing one runs on two hits. Patrick Maher (Yaphank, NY/Longwood) came on for the final inning and allowed one hit.


Lax Rule Adjustments

The and  high school boys lacrosse squads will have to get used to some adjustments to the rules that are being made this year, with the biggest among them being the elimination of the 10-second count after the initial touch.
