 Setters Cruise To Win over Southern Connecticut

 PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.- The Setters held Southern Connecticut eight field goals in the second half as Pace won going away in an 83-62 victory over the Owls. Pace stands alone in sixth place in the Northeast-10 Conference as they improve their record to 12-10 on the season and 10-8 in the NE-10. The Owls fall to 10-12 and 8-10 in conference play.

Pace jumped out to a 6-0 lead but the Owls rallied to pull even at 11 with 14:30 left in the first half. Kevin Clark’s (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore/St. John’s Univ.) triple started a 9-2 run as a lay-up by Keon Williams (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack/Iona College) at the 12:06 mark gave Pace a 20-13 lead. Southern Connecticut answered as they rallied to tie the score at 20.

The Owls took a four-point lead at 34-30 with 3:47 left in the half but the Setters had a final run in them as they pulled even in the final minute. Pace netted the final four points in the final 30 seconds as Justin Alston (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond) hit a jumper and Williams scored on a lay-up with two seconds left as the Setters headed into the break with a 42-39 lead.

Southern Connecticut’s Jose Cruz pulled the Owls to within one point with a pair of free throws early in the second half before the Setters got hot from long range. Kai Smith (Upper Marlboro, MD/St. Mary’s Ryken) got the Setters going with a triple that started a 14-2 game-deciding rally. Alston was the star of the run as he connected on three trifectas as Pace took control of the game as they pulled ahead 56-43 with just under 16 minutes to play in the game.

The Owls rallied with five unanswered points as they pulled to within eight points but the Setters’ answered with a pair of Clark triples along with a free by Alston to push the lead back into double figures at 63-48 at the midway point. The Setters dominated the rest of the way as they led by as many as 24 points down the stretch. Pace was dictated the tempo in the second half as they shot 7-for-12 from three-point range, while holding the Owls to only 36.4% shooting from the field  in the final 20 minutes of play.

For Pace, Alston and Williams shined as they each netted 22 points, with Alston shooting 4-for-5 from three-point range for the game. Alston added four steals, while Williams chipped in four rebounds and five assists. Clark shot 4-for-7 from long range as he finished with 12 points, while Jonathan Merceus (Union, NJ/Union) totaled 12 points and seven rebounds. Denzel Primus-Devonish (Riverdale, MD/St. John’s College) recorded a game-high eight assists in the contest.

The Setters return to action on Saturday, February 11 as Pace will host the College of Saint Rose in a Northeast-10 Conference game at 3:30 pm. 


Setters Fall Short to Southern Connecticut State University, 70-57

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.-The Setters fall short in a battle to take second place in the conference to the Owls of Southern Connecticut University, 70-57.  The two teams split wins this year as the Setters took the first match-up in November.  The Setters stand at 16-6 overall and 13-5 in the NE-10 Conference, now tied for third place in the NE-10 with Assumption. The Owls advance to 18-4 overall and 15-3 in the conference. 

The score was tied ten times the entire game, with nine of those ties being in the first half and ten of twelve lead changes occurred in the first half as well.  The Setters took their largest lead of the game, by five in the first at 13:33.  The last tie of the first half came at 4:40 on a layup made by Carol Johnson(New City, NY/Cardinal Spellman).  The Owls pulled ahead late to take a 35-30 lead at halftime.

The Setters came out early in the second half to tie it up for the last time at 35-35 with 18:52 left to play in the game. The Owls took a slight lead over the next two minutes before a lay-up from Brittany Shields (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) put the Setters back in front with 16 minutes remaining in the game.  The Owls pulled ahead to a 48-45 lead and rallied with a 12-4 run to pull ahead by 11 points with six minutes to play.

The Setters used an 8-2 run as Shields scored six points and Johnson connected on a pair of free throws to pull Pace to within five points at 62-57 with just under four minutes to play in the game. The Owls headed to the free throw line over the final three minutes as they went 6-of-7 at the line and held off the Setters down the stretch.

For Southern Connecticut, Camille Fantini scored a double-double with 20 points and ten rebounds while also adding six assists and three steals for the Owls.  Sylvonya Moore finished with 15 points, three assists and three steals while Moni Smith-Ocran totaled 12 points and four rebounds.

Three players scored in double digits for the Setters as Shields led the way with 20 points, nine rebounds and three assists.  Johnson totaled 13 points, eight rebounds and three assists while Allison Cleary (New Windsor, NY/Cornwall Central) put up 11 points and two assists.  Maral Javadifar(Flushing, NY/ Mary Louis Academy) finished with seven rebounds, four points and four steals, whileKerri White (Flushing, NY/Archbishop Molloy) contributed seven points, four rebounds and three assists.

The Setters return to action on Saturday Feb. 11 at 1:30 pm against the College of St. Rose for their last home game of the regular season.  The seniors will be honored prior to tip-off and there will be a Play 4 Kay Breast Cancer Foundation fundraiser. 


Boys basketball

Croton-Harmon traveled to Briarcliff to take on the Bears in boys basketball Feb. 7 looking to sweep the season series.

The Bears though had other ideas as they defeated the Tigers 77-56.

Brian Daniels continued his strong season for the Bears by scoring a game-high 24 points, including 11 in the final quarter.

Wes Turner led the Tigers with 18 points.
