Pace University Basketball Teams To Host Northeast-10 Tournament This Weekend

Men Take on New Haven on Friday Night; Women Square Off Against Assumption on Sunday Afternoon

Men’s Overview

The Pace University men’s basketball team will take on the University of New Haven Chargers in the First Round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship on Friday, February 24 at 7 pm at the Goldstein Fitness Center. The Setters finished in seventh place with a 13-13 record and were 11-11 in the NE-10. The Chargers enter the game as the #10 seed and finished the season with a 14-12 overall record and 10-12 in conference play.

Women’s Overview

The Pace University women’s basketball team will take on Assumption College in the Quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship on Sunday, February 26 at 1 pm at the Goldstein Fitness Center. The Setters finished in third place in the NE-10 with a 19-7 overall record and went 16-6 in the NE-10, while the Greyhounds come into the game as the #6 seed as they posted a 17-9 overall record and were 14-8 in conference play. Pace is ranked #4 in this week’s NCAA Division II East Region Poll for a second straight week, while the Greyhounds hold the seventh position in the region. The top-8 teams will be selected to advance to the NCAA Division II Tournament that will take place March 9-12.

Tickets prices for the game are $7 for adults and $4 for seniors and children under 10 years old. Pace students, faculty and staff are free with ID. The ticket price for non-Pace students is $1 with valid ID.

 Scouting the Pace Men’s Team 

The Setters are led by sophomore Denzel Primus-Devonish who is averaging 13.2 points, 4.2 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game. Junior Keon Williams is second in scoring with 12.1 points, while leading the team with 6.7 rebounds per game. Sophomore Jonathan Merceus is averaging 9.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game on the season. Pace is coming off a 69-59 loss to Le Moyne College in their season finale on Monday. Merceus posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while graduate Kevin Clark finished with 18 points in the game. Senior Justin Alston became the 19th member of the 100-three point club in the game as well.

 Scouting the Chargers Men’s Team 

The Chargers are led by Justin Exum who leads the team with 14.6 points per game along with 4.2 rebounds on the season. Jeffrey Adkins is second in scoring with 10.2 points and leads the team with 3.4 assists per contest. Eric Anderson leads the team with 7.7 rebounds per game. The Chargers finished the regular season with a 73-70 loss to the College of Saint Rose on Tuesday. Exum totaled 15 points in the game, while Adkins posted 15 points and six rebounds. Anderson led the team with eight boards. 

All-Time Against the Chargers  

This will be the 18th meeting between the two teams with Pace holding a 10-7 advantage in the all-time series. Pace swept both games this season as the Setters won 55-45 in November at Pace, while Primus-Devonish hit a buzzer beating three-pointer in the rematch in a 54-51 Pace win in a game played at New Haven.

Scouting the Pace Women’s Team 

The Setters are led by senior and First Team All-Conference selection Brittany Shields as she is averaging 17.6 points per game along with 9.9 rebounds per contest. Shields currently ranks fourth in the NE-10 in scoring and third in rebounds. Shields also ranks tenth in field goal percentage with a 51.5% mark, while third place with 12 double-doubles on the season. Senior Carol Johnson is averaging 10.5 points and 2.8 assists, while Kerri White leads the team with 58 triples on the season. White ranks second in the conference in three-point shooting as she is shooting 43.9% from long range this season. The Setters wrapped up the regular season with a 64-51 loss to Le Moyne College on Monday night. Junior Allison Cleary led the Setters with 13 points, while Maral Javadifar tallied 12 points and seven rebounds.

Scouting the Greyhounds Women’s Team 

The Greyhounds are led by NE-10 First Team selection Kelly Meredith who is averaging 19.1 points and six rebounds per game. Gabrielle Gibson is second in scoring with 14.4 points, while Katy Howard is averaging 11.8 points and leads the team with 3.9 assists per game on the season. Assumption is coming off a last-second 58-56 loss to American International College on Tuesday night. Gibson scored 24 points, while Meredith finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Sabrina Siciliano totaled seven points, five assists and six steals.

All-Time Against the Greyhounds

This will be the 29th all-time meeting between the two schools with Pace holding the head-to-head advantage over the Greyhounds at 18-10. The Setters and the Greyhounds split a pair of meetings this season as Assumption won 70-56 in December at Pace, while the Setters won 70-55 on the road last Saturday.

Career Milestone Watch 

For the women, Shields has moved into ninth place school history with 1,303 points, while ranking 11th in Pace history in rebounds with 749. White is seventh in school history with 96 triples in a Pace uniform, while totaling 133 three-pointers for her collegiate career (37 at Manhattan College). Johnson became the 22nd player in school history to join to 250-assist club as she has dished out 255 assists for her career. Allison Cleary is ranked 15th in school history with 65 trifectas for her Pace career, while Margo Hackett is currently eighth on the Pace freshman three-point list with 26 this season. On the men’s side, Williams has totaled 500 rebounds for his collegiate careers as he has 468 in a Pace uniform to go along with his 44 in one season at Iona College. Senior Adrian Mills is ranked 21st in scoring with 1,208 points, while placing 14th in steals with 110. Classmate Delroy Daley is ninth all-time in school history with 673 rebounds for his career. Justin Alston is tied for 18th place in school history with 100-three pointers for his career.

Next Up for the Setters

The winner of the men’s game on Friday night will advance to the NE-10 Quarterfinals and will travel to #2 seed Adelphi University on Sunday, February 26 at 1 pm. On the women’s side, the winner of Sunday’s game will advance to the NE-10 Semifinals which will take place on Thursday, March 1 at 7 pm.
