Baseball Rallies with Five Runs in the Eighth to Soar Past Owls

The Pace University baseball team, ranked #8 in this week’s NCAA Division II East Region poll, wrapped up the regular season on a positive note as they rallied with five runs in the eighth inning to soar past the Owls of Southern Connecticut State by a score of 6-3 in Northeast-10 Southwest action.

Pace improves to 29-18 overall and finish 19-10 in the NE-10 and 17-4 in the Southwest. Pace has won the NE-10 Southwest Division Title and enter the NE-10 Tournament as the #1 seed in division play. The Setters will host the First Round of the NE-10 Playoffs on Tuesday, May 8 at Finnerty Field with time and opponent to be determined.

Track and Field Wraps Up Season at Northeast-10 Championships

The Pace Track and Field Teams wrapped up their season this weekend at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships hosted by Southern Connecticut State University. For the women, Maria Montefusco (Levittown, NY/Levittown) also set a new school record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:05.04.

Patrick Schreiner (Morris Plains, NY/Parsippany) had a strong performance in the Discus with a throw of 47.00 meters, enough to bring home the bronze. Trevon Tann (Bronx, NY/Fordham Prep) set a new school record in the High Jump with a leap of 1.85m. Kyle Legare (Freeport, NY/Freeport) had a break-through performance breaking a 21 year old school record in the 400m dash. His time of 50.72 set a new school record by almost a second and a half and gave him a 6th place finish in the conference. 

Baseball Wins NE-10 Southwest Division; Splits With Southern Connecticut

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.- The Pace University baseball team, ranked #8 in this week’s NCAA Division II East Region poll, won the opener of a doubleheader against Southern Connecticut 1-0 to win the Northeast-10 Southwest Division Title. The Owls took the nightcap 3-2. Pace moves to 28-18 overall, 18-10 in the NE-10 and are 16-4 in the Southwest. The Owls stand at 31-15 overall, 18-10 and 13-7 in division play.

Michael Tamburino (Baldwin, NY/Holy Trinity) dominated the opener as he scattered three hits in the game. The Setters got the lone run of the game in the third as Bobby Horn (Stamford, CT/Westhill) drew a one-out walk and scored on a Chris Roemer (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) double. Tamburino (7-2) only needed one run from the offense as he struck out seven as he tosses hit fourth complete game of the season.

In the nightcap, Southern Connecticut got on the board with two runs in the second for an early 2-0 lead. The Setters sliced the lead in half as Brandon Martineson (Warwick, NY/Warwick) walked and moved to third on a single bySteve Sterlacci (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot). Martineson scored the first Pace run on a fielder’s choice by Roemer.

The Owls added a run in the fifth by the Setters pulled back to a one run game on a solo homerun by Tyler Collins (Stamford, CT/Trinity Catholic) in the seventh. Pace could not get the tying run and fell 3-2 in the nightcap. Brian Sundberg (Westbury, NY/WT Clarke) tossed 8 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and struck out five to fall to 4-5 on the season. Eddie Byrne (Yonkers, NY/Archbishop Stepanic) recorded the final two outs on two pick-offs.

Four Setters Selected to NE-10 Lacrosse All-Conference Teams

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.- The Setters had four lacrosse players selected to the Northeast-10 All-Conference team.Matt Mirabito (Binghamton, NY/Broome CC), Taylor Belviso (Malverne, NY/St. Mary’s), and Peter Nieporent (Wilton, CT/Norwalk) were named to the NE-10 Second Team, while freshman Steven Callahan (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) was named to the NE-10 All-Rookie Team.

Mirabito was selected to the NE-10 Second Team Attack after leading the team in points, goals and assists this season. Mirabito also led the NE-10 in assists with 35 and was second in the conference in goals. He ranks third in Division II in assists and is seventh in points in the country.

Belviso started all 15 games this season for the Setters as the long stick midfielder, earned NE-10 Second Team honor at LSM. He led the team with 22 caused turnovers on the season and was second with 45 groundballs. He finished tenth in the NE-10 in caused turnovers this year.

Nieporent has been a mainstay for the Setters as he started all 15 games this season as he was named to the NE-10 Second Team Defense. He was second on the team with 21 caused turnovers and ranked 11th in the NE-10. He also picked up 19 groundballs on the season as a four-year starter for the Setters.

Callahan broke onto the scene for lacrosse and was the biggest contributing freshman for the Setters this season. He caused three turnovers on the season and picked up 13 groundballs to earn NE-10 All-Rookie honors.
